stacy
I like this photo- but the camera tilt is really bothering me. I don't know why I did that- do you think it ruins the picture? It was just for fun so nobody is paying for it...

photobyalan.com
The tilt doesn't ruin the picture. The car does.

ellis_vener_photography
I'm doing something here which I never ever do -- which is resuggest a different crop. So much of this image is just wasted space. By wasted space I mean that there is nothing in either the details, composition or framing of what I've cropped out that adds anything to the real stregth of this picture -- which is what I think appeals to you and to me. And those elements are the girl, her gesture and the house in the background. what I've left in i ofthe area surrounding her are elements that suggest a possible story for the viewer to find their way into the photo. what follows is my theory of how we see photos. to "succeed" with any viewer, any photographs needs to work on three levels; the primary one is the emotional imagination, the second is the aesthetic (what the viewer finds pleasing or displeasing to the eye --and the third is the intellectual level -- the filtering through the viewers life experiences and ways of thinking. The aesthetic level is like the skin between the first and the third way of seeing the image.

sir_click_a_lot
Stacy, your picture looks fantastic as is.
You cropped it that way because that reflects you, and you have your own style.
Suggested crop looks good too, but that's not "STACY".
wedding-photography-denver
I like the recropped version a little better. Sorry, hope that you don't mind me chiming in.
medina photography cherry
good tilt, don't like the reflection of the car on her left. cropped version much better.
stacy
Thanks everyone for your input. And Ellis- thank you for such a thought out critique and for trying another crop. Honestly- I still don't know which crop I prefer. To me the reflection of the car adds some interest so it's good to know that it's distracting to others. al_kaplan1
Leave it as is. Second guessing is rarely succesful.
Spearhead
Good editing and critique is very different than second guessing. FWIW, I think there is too much dead space but I'm not sure the crop works either. Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
mark_jacoby___raleigh__nc
No problem with the tilt at all. Who says everything needs to be squared up in neat little boxes? btw, I like both the crops, but the original gives a better perspective as to the size of the room and the subjects relationship to it. tony_cabrera
IMO Cropping is not a rule, it's personal taste. I like the original better because it tells a better story with what everyone is calling dead space. It gives perspective. The background is just as important as the subject. johnsloan
How'd you light this? Also, what did you use to soften it? I like your crop and believe it is definitely you.
stacy
Thanks John- it's available light but the light color is tweaked with a plug- in called "Dreamy Photo" from Auto FX. It used to be free but I think it might be in one of their bigger packages now. It seems like it adds color, blur and glow. It is softened the same way in various layers. Thanks everyone! matt_pearson
Woah! Thanks for cluing me into Dreamy Photo! I just did my first wedding today and it is an awsome tool. I used a nikkor 105 2.5 and it can be unflatteringly sharp in really tight shots. This has saved me oodles of money on mist filters, etc. I also like the picture the way it is.
