strings
Why is it that the tripod collar for the L series 70-200 zooms is soexpensive?Anywhere I can find one cheap? (I assume used is fine for a tripodcollar...?) Thanks
hkbmac
The 2.8 versions come with it installed. They are hard to find used because most people end up selling their F4 lenses with them installed. Canon's pricing is a little crazy sometimes. $60 for a plastic lenshood, etc. You can look on eBay for a Grey Market one.
stephen_streit
Ahh yes the glorified canon hose clamp. Get the black one it works on the 70-2004L and its like 40 bucks cheaper its just not "canon white" Black one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=211436&is=REG White one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=186247&is=REG
PuppyDigs
Too bad Canon doesn't make them in 3rd world countries where labor is almost free. You could exploit the less fortunate and save a few bucks. Or dash off a design and have your local machine shop make one. Of course it may cost 10x more... Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
tzenyujuei
or maybe they should just imploy the young and unfortunate... child-labor sweat shops are all the craze you know? or perhaps trained monkeys... you feed them banana... they make you tripod collars... its a good trade. ah the possibilities... jim_larson1
Wait. . .are these items NOT made in a third world country? Even if they are made in downtown Tokyo -> I don't think there is anyone who thinks these items are reasonably priced.
cgo
And once we acquire our cheap goods, we'll tell everyone else to boycott Canon because of their exploitation ...

markci
I guess we now know why L lenses are so expensive: it's the white paint.
PuppyDigs
I own two of Tripod Ring A models, one white and one black. Both have "Made in Japan" inscribed. Japan isn't a 3rd world country. Last time I was there almost everything was more expensive than the USA. I felt like a dad burn pauper when buying a decent dinner or a beer. Anywho, Japanese workers have to pay the morgage and put food on the table just like here. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. PuppyDigs
"I don't think there is anyone who thinks these items are reasonably priced." Like I said eariler, price a build at your local machine shop and you'll appreciate the reasonable price of the Tripod Ring A. And, yes, I've paid for several custom jobs and it wasn't cheap. stephen_streit
Its different when you only have to make one but when you have a real market and you make thousands you can afford to cut people a break. Material and labor that thing would cost 30 bucks tops to build in the volume they do.
jim_larson1
To continue the thread hijack: For what you get, I think a $30 MSRP is on the high side -> because they ARE built in volume. And yes. ..I am one of those Noobs who was dumb enough to buy one. A white one. Even knowing the black one would fit. <sigh>. I spend too much on camera equipment (as I continue to eye the ST-E2). Any rumours of new lenses at Photokina?
beeman458
"Get the black one it works on the 70-2004L and its like 40 bucks cheaper its just not "canon white" The tripod collar for the 300mm f/4.0L non-IS fits the 70-200mm f/4.0L quite nicely. PuppyDigs
The Tripod Ring A is not a mass market item. It's a specialized part marketed to a small circle of serious hobbyists and gadget geeks (most pro lenses already come with a tripod ring). And this is the same silly group willing to pay $30 for a lens hood for the EF 50 1.4 USM, so no prob gettin' the asking price. Sure they made thousands since 1990, but they ain't cranking them out like SureShots or Rebels. Now if they were made in China and every other kid needed/wanted one, you could probably pick one up at WallWorld for jack. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. PuppyDigs
"Material and labor that thing would cost 30 bucks tops to build in the volume they do." True. But the final price must also refect distributor and dealer markups, so $100 is about right. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me.
