bob fowler
I must have owned at least a dozen Unicolor Unidrums over the past 25+ years. I have NEVER had, much less seen, the elusive "spacer" until I did a Yahoo search this evening and found this post from back in June of '03 by Jon. The problem then - what to make it from...
My wife has a musical instrument repair business (woodwinds), and because she has to cut a lot of cork, she has a number of drum "practice pads" around to use as a cutting surface. HA! The perfect material!!!
I used a scroll saw to slice a 1/4" thick slab from a pad that was about 3/4" thick. BTW - If you've never cut rubber with a scroll saw, you've missed an interesting - and character building - life experience. Using the jpeg file that Tim so unselfishly provided to Jon (who had the sense of community to share it with the world), I proceeded to duplicate the part with razor blades and hobby knives. The result, no more problems processing 4 sheets of 4X5 film in a Unidrum.
My next project is to build a shrine to those two gentlemen in my backyard... BTW - I owe you guys a beer, or two, or three...
louis_jensen1
An alternative to the spacer is to bend over the corners of the two negatives that are together, about 1/16 inch (e.g. bend the upper left corner of the first and the upper right corner of the second). This prevents the negatives from sliding together.
__jon__
Hi Bob, Wow, shrines AND beer... I'm game. Glad you got a good spacer. I had tried a couple other methods, but nothing worked well, and I didn't like bending the corners of the negatives. Having the pic helped a great deal... Much thanks to Tim. Next I'm trying to find a way to replace the cracked gasket in the sliding-plug end of the Unicolor six reel 35mm drum--looks like an o-ring may fit the bill. bob fowler
Yup Jon, it was a fun project (OK, it wasn't THAT fun). The shrine construction has to wait until the foot of snow in the backyard melts down a bit... hehehe
__jon__
Here is a quick photo of one of my spacers. I used an X-acto knife and the material was hard rubber gasket material from my local hardware store.
