RE: Recommendations for travel photography equipment needed

For backpack travel, I'd carry one 35mm manual SLR such as a used Nikon FM-2N ($300?)with one fast 50mm/1.4 ($200?)for low light conditions and possibly the 28-105 AF zoom for most conditions (I have one and I really like the zoom range and picture quality for travel). I might also carry a small point and shoot like the Olympus Epic for snapshots at dinner or in the train (the camera fits in a pocket). Oh, and don't forget a small table top tripod and release.

If you travel in style, then a digital SLR with a lot of CF cards might be fun (but you might have to hire a porter to carry the steamer trunks).

Helen,

I just got back from 3 months of backpacking. I had a travel partner to help share the load of my heavy backpack...

I'd get an advanced SLR and a long zoom. The Nikon 24(or20)-120 would be my choice. Consider a D-slr. Reason being if you're tired you won't take shots, as said before. You don't want so much equipment that you have to worry about it all the time. Less is more. You can pack less camera gear and more necessities. Anything over 2 months is a long trip.

BRING A QUICK RELEASE TRIPOD!!!! I brought a light SLK that did the job but screwing it on every time was a pain. A small lowepro bag that fits into another daypack is all you want, trust me.

The flights were also a pain because of the film scanning issue. Again, consider a D-slr. You can get CD's burned quite cheaply on the road.

Lots to think about.

Pete
