Fuji Sensia... pushing

Recommended Posts

Just some observations and queries about pushing Sensia.

I've done it successfully with 200 speed 1 stop and have been quite

happy about that-- grain and contrast weren't very different from

before and I wouldn't hesitate to do this in a bind-- but what of the

Sensia 400 variety straight? I cannot gleam anything from a reduced

resolution picture but does it push well 1-stop to EI800?

I've yet to try Sensia 200 on a 2-stop push but I've never heard of

it done and I don't think it'll do too well so I'm not really

inclined to try. Cost wise, pushing Sensia 200 for me is cheaper than

buying the 400 speed straight.

Interested in hearing what you may have noted from pushing Sensia.

Cheers,

MK

Hi

I do not pay extra for E-6 push processing (done by one of the best pro-labs in Toronto), so I do it quite often with Provia 100F and 400F, and Sensia 100.

Both Provia films give really great result with this formula: expose +1 stop, and process +1.1/3 stops. By 'great results' I mean that except for an acceptable increase in contrast, lost sharpness is just not an issue (no x10 loupe examination for me, but I do scanning, and project my slides with a pretty good and big set-up). Actually, I almost always push 400F - the way I see it the resulting low light and long lens capabilities by far outweigh the quality compromise.

I cannot however, say the same thing about Sensia 100. With the formula I mentioned above, grain, increased contrast and decreased sharpness are more serious with Sensia 100. No surprise there, it is a consumer film, and it is cheaper, right?

So no push-processing for Sensia 100? I have been using a slightly 'milder' formula: expose @ ISO 160, and push process one full stop. When I weigh the resulting quality loss vis-a-vis the money I save by buying Sensia instead of Provia, this mild formula is the way to go for everyday shooting for me.<div>008UnZ-18319384.jpg.4496c3aebc797aeab45b48480ed728d8.jpg</div>

To A. Taner,

<p>

Is the image you posted supposed to be an example of the processing rule that <i>doesn't</i> work for Sensia 100? I can't see anything wrong with it. Do you have an example illustrating your preferred method for processing sensia 100?

Hi Stuart

Raymond is right on - contrast is very high, and dynamic range becomes even narrower than the usual ~5 stops (very easy to overexpose highlights). I was not able to find too many examples of the 'milder' formula on my computer; going with the jack russell theme again, here is one:<div>008VDb-18329084.jpg.30f8dbbc9f78387fd82510cb3d0c6d03.jpg</div>

Here is Provia 400F exposed @ 1600 ISO, push processed 2.1/3 stops. The last one hour of daylight, an older manual focus Minolta 300mm f/4.5 lens (no internal focus) on a monopod. Given that the optical variables are working against it, I would say this is an acceptable performance, despite the obvious grain.<div>008VE0-18329384.jpg.6329be49960f07fe92b808ad15a1682d.jpg</div>

With regards to film costs for me developing is standard for all E-6; no additional charges for pushing/pulling 1-stop. But the per roll cost of Sensia 200 to 400 (or the Provia films for that matter) adds up after a while (film isn't inexpensive to begin with here).

But I was fundamentally curious to see people's results with the various emulsions in extremities and Mr. Taner you have been very helpful in that respect. Since I'll be carrying 100 and 200 on my next trip I won't need to push 100; I don't find the added contrast detrimental in your pictures but I'd probably have some exposure difficulties with the narrower latitude as a result.

I've attached an example of Sensia 200 pushed 1-stop.<div>008VIz-18330084.jpg.0e323329eef5d838e5824de767484a4f.jpg</div>

  • 2 years later...
I'm going to a small gig tonight (ie: social club/pub) and the only film I have is Sensia 100, I have used it before for a small gig and they were okay (the band liked 'em anyway) and I tonight I was thinking of pushing it to 400, as an experiment as I have no idea what I am doing!! When I get the pics back, can I post a few for constructive critism? I need all the help I can get!
