EOS 10 sticky shutter

I have a 12 year old Eos 10 (not 10D!), that has developed the sticky

black tar on the shutter problem. I would like to know if anyone has

recently had this repaired/fixed (I believe that the entire shutter

assembly is replaced) in the UK? If so, where, when and how much?

I'd like to know before I attempt to clean it myself!

TIA.

Unless you need the specific unique functions of this camera, or unless you are emotionally attached, I would suggest you look at a newer model, such as the Elan II or Elan 7. You can purchase one of these for probably what it would cost to get the EOS 10 fixed; they are quite cheap these days, used. Although I suppose that you could have a problem with one of them as well. I have never had a problem w/ my Elan II.

I have exactly the same issue with an EOS 10 I bought in 1992. There a black shiny streaks on the shutter. Having searched the web, like you, I found that it is caused by a piece of melted foam. You can try to clean it off carefully with lighter fuild and/or take it in for professional repairs. Here in the US, it would cost at least $200. I bought a Canon A2 for $100 on eBay. I have EOS 10's go for $60 - $100. I wish I had been patient and picked an EOS 5 or EOS 1. Beware, there are folks on Ebay who will tell you that an A2 is the same as an EOS - just different labeling fro teh US market. Not so as I later found out.

Can't say I like the A2 as much as my EOS 10. Now that I have a safety camera, I will attempt to clean the shutter.

I am going to go digital but perhaps after the 'bleeding edge' phase has passed. I can not shell out 3 large ones for a camera, besides, I will always keep a film camera, just like my turntable and vinyls.
