jack_lee6
Hi all, I am trying to decide whether to buy into the Olympus system. My main question is whether the Tamron-Olympus Adapatall2 mount is strong enough to handle the Tamron 400 f4? I have read most of the Olympus postings and could not find a good answer. Background information: A long time ago, I used to shoot for a living. Now, I shoot mostly for fun. I shoot a few weddings each year just to pay for my hobby. I want to do lots of travel picturs in the future, so I am considering Olympus for its small size. Equipment: Contax G1 Contax 21mm 2.8 Contax 35mm 2 Contax 45mm 2 Nikon F3hp+MD4 Nikon 28mm 2.8 AIS Nikon 55mm 2.8 AIS Micro Nikon 105mm 2.5 AIS Tamron 90mm 2.5 Macro 49mm filter Tamron 180mm 2.5 LD Tamron 300mm 2.8 LD Tamron 400mm 4 LD Thanks. joris_van_looveren
I have a Tamron 200/3.5 with the adaptall2 OM adapter and find it more than solid enough. I figure if you want sharp pictures from a 400 you need to support the lens, so not all the weight will be on the lens mount/adapter anyway. Maybe you can take your lens to a second-hand shop and try to get a feel for the OM + Adaptall2 combination?
douglas_green1
When used with a large lens, the weight that the mount has to support is that of the camera body, not the lens, since one does not hold the camera by the body alone.
lex_jenkins
I've used Adaptall mounts on my OM-1 and Nikons. They're equally strong and, in my opinion, the camera bodies' mounts are equally strong. The only SLR mount that is significantly stronger than any other is the old Canon FD mount, especially with the breechlock ring. Other than that, every other make is about equal. The OM bodies are so light that supporting a long, heavy lens and letting the body hang off the lens would probably be the best method. That's what I do with my old Vivitar T-mount 300mm f/5.6 preset, a pretty heavy bugger for that kind of lens. With telezooms in the 80-200mm range I support the body and lens equally. Anything shorter and lighter I support the body.
xato
I don't use the Olympus camera body tripod mount when I use the Tamron 400/4. I assume that your 400 has the tripod mount. I think that having two mounting interfaces, ie. Oly body--Oly mount and Tamron adapter--Tamron lens hanging off the tripod is a bit too much for any mount. There is just too much flex when you add up the total of the two mounting surfaces. So I just use the Tamron one. Warren
