dave mckeen
I want an external flash for my E-20. It looks like the recommended FL-40 is out of production. (I know- Best Buy...) What's a good replacement?
douglas_green1
Just about any good automatic Non-dedicated flash unit should work. I've used a Vivitar 285 and a Sunpak 422D with my E-10 with excellent results. Just set the flash in any non-TTL auto mode that uses the flashes sensor, and use the dials or scales on the back of the flash to determine the right f-stop setting to use for that mode with the ISO setting your E-20 is set for. In fact, I often use them together as a cheap and portable studio setup, with the 285 as a bounce flash pointing at the ceiling, the camera's own built in flash doing direct fill-in, and the Sunpak firing from the side into a diffuser or reflector using a slave trigger. I set the camera to manual exposure mode, set the shutter to 1/80, and the f-stop to the setting indicated by the 285 and 422 scales (picking modes on each where they agree on the f-stop). george_shihanian
There are plenty of FL-40s out there on the used market. Ebay, Cameta, etc.
GerrySiegel
I am using a simple FL 20 with one of the C series. It is better than I expected. Limited choices of f stop but works OK. I am not ready to jump in to the FL50, and it at least allows TTL with your camera. It might be all you need and it is very pocketable. If not, I guess a used FL 40 is appropriate. Can't figure why Oly dumped this model so completely. You also need budget for a TTL to TTL cable and maybe a flash bracket by any mfr.
