t_crabb
I have a fair knowledge of photography but little knowledge of printing processes. I am considering some business in creating postcards of my local region. I wish to know what format a printing company would want work to be in for this situation. I assume digital but I have no idea what file format or resolution. Any adivice appreciated.
v._willendorf
Actually, the printer you choose will give you those specs. <P> The printers I have used have asked for 300dpi PhotoShop files and one printer even asked that I send layers. You'll probably need to be familiar with an FTP program (Fetch for Macs is a good one, and I like CoffeeCup or Cute FTP for PC) If the files are too big, you'll be asked to zip them before sending them. CoffeeCup and Cute also have a zip program.
Jochen_S
300dpi jpg or tiff, tonal range from 100 - 3%, CMYK with under color reduction, if you know what you are doing and want it offsetprinted. But it's no mistake to ask the guys what they prefer. I can't imagine anybody still working with processcameras. By the way look for reasonable priced offers at the HAM-radio-scene. QSL.CZ are nearly unbeatable cheap here in Europe. I doubt I could make cards cheaper if I'd only pay films, plates and paper while using a borrowed press.
