pradeep1
I am based in India and just started shooting last year. I have been asked by a lab to buy my photographs. What kind of photos do you think do people like to see from India? Could that be the value proposition that i could offer? I dont have many photos which speak of this now though this is my portfolio now http://tinyurl.com/2apr2 i would love some suggestions and how to go about quoting for my photos and how much they would be worth to quote. thank you. mikael_karlsson
Pradeep: Without knowing what the lab wants to use the images for, it's impossible to give you accurate information about quoting a price/fee. The usage determines the value and the fee would be very different if they want a display print compared to using the image in an ad, for example. As far as images from India, there's a really good stock agency in India called Dinodia and if you're interested in selling your work you should contact them. Find them at http://www.dinodia.com/ Hope that helps.
pradeep1
Thank you Mikael that was very informative, so u suggest that i mail the labs and find out what they want the pictures for is it? I am sorry if these are stupid questions but i have never done this before in my life :) thanks
mikael_karlsson
Pradeep: Yes, ask the lab wehat they want to do with the pictures. Once you know that it will be a lot easier to determine a fair price.
belledeux diana
Pradeep
What photos of India? Which India? There is so much! Out of your portfolio, I liked "Mother cat and kitten" and "Majestic". At least those stood out to me as so real, so natural, and there is a feeling of environment, expressed so simply and so beautifully. "Mother cat and kitten" made me think of the cats of Rome! I have seen them myself, and there is a web site about them....CLICK HER FOR THE CATS OF ROME.....you can see them here, or run a search on Google for "cats of Rome".
And remember, light tells so much of the story...find the light, find the story.....
But the mother cat and kitchen are "moving about" in their environment, and you can almost see outside the photograph....to the street, the nearby door...you can almost hear it....the quiet alley, where only the muffled street sounds filter through, soft like a cat....
I would say your best bet is to be as honest as you can in all your photographs.....that's when you get the "stuff"......
You've just started photographing you said....so find yourself through your photographs...notice what you photograph the best....and makes you the happiest.....Discover where YOU find India! bastian_blankenburg
For especially "Indian photographs", go for people, because it's the people that makes the place (as we all know :) But I also like your "objects" section and "a boy with many hands" and "blues peep" of your experiments section very much. qtluong
Ask them for more details: size, placement, distribution/circulation, then refer to published tables (some are accessible from the link below) and be prepared to negotiate down. Terra Galleria Stock Photography. pradeep1
Thanks Mr Quang, i will mail them and get the details. Just a question which popped in my head do i have to underplay a lot to get an entry to sell my photographs or think of the efforts that went into each photograph and price them accordingly. i see bob atkins page on stock photography going for around 25$ a photograph, some links i see people sell their photographs for 100s of dollars, i am really confused :)
qtluong
In general, there is the "right managed" pricing where you pay according to usage, and the "royalty free" pricing, where you pay by the number of pixels. Do a search on those terms in Google to learn more. In general, royalty-free prices are pretty low, and not a good idea for photographers but have been pushed by some agencies who do business in volume, and now are partof the stock photography landscape. Often, lower-quality, lower-res, or common images are licensed RF. Bob Atkins licenses royalty free.
