A new Err 99 problem

I have done quite a bit of searching for anyone who has encountered

my particular Err 99 problem but have yet to find another.

When I use my 300D with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, everything

works fine. When I attach an EF25 II Extension Tube (brand new), I

get Err 99 about 50% of the time when I press the shutter button. I

almost always use this in manual focus...can't really be sure if it's

happened in auto focus. Has anyone else run into this? I'm trying to

determine whether I should be returning the extension tube - I also

have a message into Canon's tech support on this. I've tried the

extension tube with a Tamron 75-300 and it worked fine but I haven't

used it many times like that.

Also, I see a number of people getting Err 99 with the 18-55 EF-S

lens that comes with the 300D. I also had that problem but the error

code came up as soon as I turned on the camera (after the lens made a

short, horrific grinding noise). I returned the lens to the NJ repair

facility...came back about 10 days later and haven't had that problem

since.

Any help is appreciated.

hi bob,

i have had error 99 problems with my 300d and extension tubes. the problem seems to spring from a lack of decent contact between the electrical connections, -some lenses have slighty more raised contacts and therefore ensure enough current to flow, while others [like my efs 18-55] have slighty lower contacts, and i get an error.

there's probably nothing wrong with your extension tubes. i added a bit of solder to the tips of the contacts in my tubes, and now they work fine...
