tim_gee
Hello everyone, I havn't been around for some time and it's good to see a so many new names on the forum. The question has probably been asked and answered before but I couldn't find any reff while glancing through archives. Question: what is the best glue to use for glueing the little red dome marker dot back on my Summicron? There are remnants of the previous glue which I'd rather not try to remove, so a compatible glue would seem to be logical. Cheers all,
jordi_rosales
- Araldite -
eric_calderwood1
Yes, Araldite. I used this to glue a new red dot to a 35mm Summicron i used to have. Don't forget to leave the lens out in a room for at least 24 hours, until the glue has completely set and finished outgassing. Happy Easter. Rob F.
Tell about Araldite. I haven't seen it. Where do you get it, how is it used? An extremely strong glue that doesn't get enough attention is GE RTV, aka silicone sealer. I once used it to glue fan blades onto their hub, when nothing else would work. A disadvantage is the very long setup time of 24 hours or more.
al_kaplan1
Years ago I tried Super Glue on my second model 50mm tabless Summicron but it didn't hold for long. That time I completely lost the dot, and it never occurred to me to write to Leitz at the time. I like having a dot because I often put lenses on my camera more by feel than looking. I carved one out of a plastic toothbrush handle. Now my 'cron sports a purple multi-facetted little jewel of a dot, and it's been held in place with epoxy for well over 20 years! tim_gee
Thanks for the answers. It seems epoxy (Araldite)has the consensus. Rob, as you have probably gathered, Araldite is simply a brand name for a two pack epoxy. It comes in "super-strength" = 24 hours cure and 5 minute. Both are low temperature cure. Like you Al I find the little red dot helps engage the lens by feel. I was darned lucky to see it pop off and then fish it out from inside the chair in which I was sitting so my tooth brush is still in tact! Thanks again
gary_pinkerton1
a pair of these little dots went for 29+ bucks recently on an auction site. I was neither buyer nor seller. I've always got'em for free from Leica so I thought this was "interesting".
dan flanders
When the red dot disappeared from my 50 C I found a defunct lens mount and pried off the dot. Used super glue (cyanoacrylate) and it is still there after eight or nine years. Can you still get the dots from Leica?
james_elwing
Harry has the question. Do Leica still supply new dots? The late dots at least were flat. The early ones, eg on 90 Elmar, screwed in, using unknown adhesive. I have 2 that have sheared off leaving red in the hole. I bought 2 new dots through a dealer recently, but was told that was all they had. I may cut one down to try fitting over the red remnant; any advice? Last time I used long time setting Araldite, on my black Summicron, 15+ years ago; still OK.
andy_aitken
I had the red dot fall off my 40mm 'cron last year and never really fretted about it. Later on I put the CL (with 40mm) in for a repair. When it came back the repair guy had stuck a tiny bit of "Leica Red" sticky back plastic in it's place. It just made me think "these guys care about the cameras they work on!" andy_aitken
Al, how many dots can you get out of a toothbrush, I think I may have a business proposition for you ;-)
