Hello,

Im pretty keen on getting a fisheye lense (which covers the whole

frame) on my upcoming Hassy 500CM. Is there such thing as a fisheye

lense for the 500 series? If no, what's the widest lense you can get

on it? If yes, what type of lense is it? Prices?

Ive found It hard to even find fisheye lenses for the Hasselblad, so

few brands to even choose from! Any help would be great.

Regards,

Marius S.

Hasselblad makes (or at least made) a fisheye (I believe a 30mm) for the 500 series, you can find them now and then. They were not too popular once the fisheye-look was done to death in commercial ad photography and became trite and passe, and they were enormously expensive at the time. Many people opted for the Russian 30mm which could be modified to fit a 2000/200 series (lens has no shutter).

There's actually a Hasselblad fisheye up for auction right now - looks like it will finish for

about $3200 or so. They are available for about $6500 new.

Kiev USA sells the russian version converted to a hasselblad mount for about $1100 new,

but you need a 200/2000 camera as there is no shutter in the lens. Considering that the

same lens sells for $300 or so in the Kiev mount, you are paying $800 for the conversion.

Marius,

I have a 30mm CF and love it. They do show up on Ebay fairly frequently and seem to fetch inconsistant prices. But I do pay attention and can recommend the following based on what I have noticed over the past 2 - 3 months:

1) Make sure that the lens includes the case and four filters! Although the items are replaceable, they are expensive filters.

One of the four filters is to be fitted in the lens during use for proper image quality. So, you may only see three filters besides the lens, caps and case since the fourth one is in the lens. Make sure you question the seller to assure that the fourth filter is truly there!

2) Assure that the lens is T*. While non- T* 30mm Distagons are quite rare, they do exist and this is a lens that benefits highly from multicoating.

3) Pricing is highest for the latest CFi, followed by the CF and C versions.

4) Judging from Ebay, I would not pay more than $2800 for this lens with it's filters, case and caps unless it is a CFi version. While some have bid high on these lenses, they do appear frequently enough that one can be obtained for around this price with great glass as well. The "C" version can sometimes sell as low as $2,000 from what I have seen and has the same optics as the later CF and CFi.

Please e-mail me if you have any questions.

The question you have to ask yourself is "Why did I buy Hasselblad?" the answer is easy, for the lense quality. So why in the name of )*(*(*%#(^#% would you ever put a less sharp and less coated lense on???

The 30MM fisheye is superbly sharp and full frame, that is why it is not funny. The lense is excellent for doing full length portraits that include the environment. The center of the lense does not distort significantly and the very high edge to edge sharpness makes the picture interesting with the high detail. If you want to use one try renting but do no buy the cheap alternatives. If you are so inclined just put an old fisheye adaptor on for fun. The 30MM Zeiss is a lense that can do serious work.

The testing (which is not optimized) I refered to is based on slides. Supposed zeiss has 200 lp/mm from MTF, you will only get 100lp/mm on slide for zeiss if the slide has a 200lp/mm resolution. If the slide has a 100lp/mm resolution, zeiss will only get 70lp/mm on the slide.
