connealy
I just want to provide a brief update on Subhankar Banerjee, who was mentioned in a previous posting by Joe Murphy. I had the pleasure of attending Banerjee's presentation and slide show at New Mexico State University this evening. It was something of a homecoming for Banerjee as he came directly from Calcutta to Las Cruces to attend school at NMSU where he received degrees in physics and computer science before moving on to documentary photography. After working for a time with Boeing in Seattle, he spent two years producing a photo documentary on the the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge which resulted in a fine book. Now, he is touring 25 cities with his presentation, and his work will be exhibited in 27 museums in the U.S. and elsewhere.
The hour-and-a-half presentation was totally captivating for anyone interested in wildlife photography, the ANWR, the politics of oil, or just a great adventure story. The slides presented do not properly represent Banerjee's fine work, but his book is widely available, and the traveling exhibit features large-format prints which show the magnificence of the Alaskan Arctic in vivid detail. There is also now a web site with much information on it about Banerjee's project along with a schedule of his presentations and exhibits. Well worth your time, even if you have to travel a bit to take it in.
joe_murphy1
Mike, did he have any of the large prints with him? I'm wondering how they looked if he did. Thanks for posting this. J
connealy
All of his references to the slides included a comment on the details that could only be seen in the large prints. Kind of frustrating. I assumed that it was largely the product of the little home projector that was being used, but my daughter who works in the Natural History museum in Albuquerque said he made the same comments at the presentation there. Fortunately, there is an exhibit of the prints in Albuquerque and we will go up to take it in about a week from now. Going over to spend a few days at the Anasazi ruins at Chaco Canyon after that. Should be a nice week for enjoying and doing photography.
