The modern eye examination microscopes have bulit-in chin rests on the equipment arm (since I have glaucoma, I get to see one of these every 4-5 months). So, perhaps in the old days, they were a separate item... Otherwise, could use it for those mornings when a cup of coffee won't do the trick.
