bds1
Dull facts about the bass: The bass guitar has quite a bit of history, it used to belong to the British band The Jesus and Mary Chain and has travelled around the world many times over. It last appeared in the states on the lolapalooza (sp?) tour, Here it is at the ICA in London last year (M6 40mm Neopan 1600)

aric_rothman
I was hoping for beer :) But seriously, great images. I like the second and third especially: bass as subject, and the two guitar necks parallel to each other.

al_kaplan1
I'm with Ray on this. I thought perhaps you'd got a fantastic shot of a leaping green fish or something. The picture is outstanding!
aric_rothman
Here's a friend playing a different kind of bass. It's a highly portable amplified bass of his own design.

Chris

bacsa
I don't get the point with fishing... how's fishing related to "bass"?
Anyway, here're my basses...again different kinds,

of a jazz trio; 135mm, f/2.8, 0.7s, HP5+

of a Gipsy band; 135mm f/2.8 1/60s, Neopan1600

joshroot
A "bass" is a kind of freshwater fish. It's pronounced so that it rhymes with "ass".
Spearhead
This is my friend, bass player and producer Bill Laswell:

Tabla Beat Science at The Fillmore, Copyright 2003 Jeff Spirer

Some people ask why he's facing away, and I point out that this is the view he usually gives the audience. This was shot at sound check. Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
bacsa
Nice one, Jeff...but your explanation is not really an explanation. It generates another question: why is he giving this view to the audience? Without knowing him, i can think of two opposite reasons:
-lack of self confidence (i'm so ugly, let's not bias them, maybe if they don't see me they can still like my music);
-too much self confidence (they will recognize me from my music, no need to show my face)
There are other reasons possible, too. He could be better concentrating on music without seeing the public staring at him. Or, it could be a try to give something special to his look, that nobody else has, see the Angus Young "wardrobe", the Jimi Hendrix teeth-guitar, ... mainly any star has something, if he/she cares about his/her look... Nothing wrong with this, of course!
Given the fact that he shows this on your photo at a sound check too, i would go for the last one.
Sorry, i'm in a melancholic mood. It's the weather. Spearhead
I think he finds it useful to look at the other musicians. Not sure why. He does occasionally face the audience. Here's another one.

Tabla Beat Science at the Fillmore 2, Copyright 2003 Jeff Spirer

Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
markus_biedermann
I guess he is one of the bass players who likes to comminucate with the drummer also visually a great deal. Lots of us bassplayers do that, we think the bassplayers are not recognized anyway. ;):) We even like that, gives a mystery of "i have the power, nobody needs to know." Bass Players make Harmony and Groove, let others do the show. The audience usually likes guitar players and singers. :D
fuck
Okay, Jeff. Now I'm really impressed/jealous. Laswell freakin' rocks. Painkiller is one of my all-time favorite bands.
Spearhead
Unfortunately, Painkiller plays live so rarely, if ever again, that I've never had a chance toshoot them.
Here's Bill's wife Gigi, singing with Tabla Beat Science.

Gigi with Tabla Beat Science, Copyright 2003 Jeff Spirer
Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
