ed_renenger
I recently acquired a Canon Speedlite 199A, but when I install new batteries the flash does not power up. Does the flash have to be mounted to a hot shoe before it will power up? Or is the flash malfunctioning? Thanks!
awahlster
No it does not need to be mounted to work. If the contacts are clean and the batteries are good then I would say you just might have a bad flash. Mark W.
joe_margetts2
I had the same problem on a 299T a while ago. It started up intermittantly then after a while failed altogether. I was in France at the time taking interiors of a gite and had no spare which ruined the job. The flash was not economical to repair so went in the bin. I've since found that flash units generally are the most unreliable part of any system and have paid out for new units ever since. Expensive but safer if you are doing work which relies on flash illumination. I don't know which camera you are using but new Canon flash units work fine on the T-90 and F1 supporting all the features of the camera. lee_brand
Clean the battery contacts well and leave it on for a while. It may come to life after a time.
