Zeiss Super Ikonta BX 533/16 disassembly questions

Hello.

 

I've got a few questions on Ikonta disassembly.

 

First is: how do you remove the winding knob? It has a screw at the

top that doesn't seem to want to move. I don't want to force it and

I suspect that the pins that hold the 'wings' on top of the winding

knob is actually a single pin that goes through the screw itself and

I need to remove the pin first.

 

Second: middle element of the lens assembly. how do you remove it

from the shutter? rear and the front unscrewed quite easily...

 

Third, the bellows. It seemed that the bellows where attached to the

back of the lens with just a threaded ring and no glue. Was there

supposed to be glue and did it just dry out?

You need to completely remove the front face plate. This includes removing the tiny screws on the lens ring (the one that has the distance scale).<P>

 

Remove the screws that hold the face plate. I think there are four of them (but not positive at this moment). From there, I think you'll need a spanner wrench to remove the inner lens element.<P>

 

You will need to reset the lens to infinity on reassembly before reattaching the distance scale.<P>

As far as I know, the retaining ring simply keeps the shutter/lens assembly to the front standard. The bellows should already be glued to the back of the front standard. If it's not, you can glue it yourself. Contact cement will work, as will a good household glue. I find that Pro-Bond is an excellent glue. Just clean up the excess.<P>

 

As for the winding knob, I'll take a look when I get home later.

The screw that sits atop the winding knob should come off with just a minimal amount of force. It unscrews in the normal direction. Possibly, there is some corrosion or rust (same thing, I guess) that is preventing that.

 

The real danger here is if the screw head snaps off. Then you would need to drill it out and retap the hole.

I meant to add that you should try a SMALL amount of penatrating oil to see if that will help free the screw. Again, a small amount only -- one or two drops will be more than enough.

Konstantin, yet another error on my part. I'm starting to wonder if I actually know anything.

 

Anyway, regarding the bellows: I've found some cameras where the bellows are bonded to the front standard. On other cameras, only the lens retaining ring keeps the bellows fixed to the lens standard. This appears to be the case with the 533/16 and other Zeiss-Ikon cameras.

The wind knob can be removed with a screw driver, and it is a right-hand screw. If it is stuck try putting a small drop of acetone in it instead of penetrating oil. Under this knob is a one way clutch, an index disc, below this is about 20 parts that all have to be put back in there respective places exactly as they came out.

 

On the lens, remove the distance scale (with the camera at infinity), then the front cover (chrome on your camera?) then, witness mark the shutter barrel as to the position of the range finder gear, now remove the front (movable) element. Now remove the range finder assembly in one unit, by removing the four cheese head (that is the technical term in all German camera repair manuals) screws that hold it in place. Now you are ready to remove the lens, this usually takes a ring wrench, since it is never finger tight.

 

The bellows is never glued to the lens standard, the shutter ring holds it in place, and there is a stiffener behind the ring, between the shutter and the standard are many paper shims to set infinity. Now you are ready to CLA the shutter.
