stupid ratings - what do we do?

If you're only here for the ratings, you're here for the wrong reasons from the getgo. Don't set yourself up for negative experiences. Get a pair of rose colored glasses and wear them for a bit. Sometimes, a view through a different lens is just what a person needs to see more clearly what is really before them.

no ratings are not the only thing members are here for, atleast not me, i see ratings as a learning process, i would never mind a 1/1 rating at all, i dont have any qualms, its just that i would love to know why the rater considered it a 1/1, and comment on the photo so that i can improve my skills. and by the way i did send a mail to abuse@photo.net, seemed like this guy has rated only 2 photos so far and they were both mine :) and i have also requested them to see if they can change a few 7/7 ratings that i have got:) happy shooting and cheers!

What I'm really curious about is why people are so concerned with what raters pictures look like. Sure it's interesting to check out others pictures; but honestly. Aside from retaliatory or "mate" rating most people are not going top give excellent pictures average ratings. And the quality of the raters pictures are not going to affect the quality of your pictures. It's been said before; you don't have to be the best photographer to tell a good picture from a bad one. Same with books, paintings etc, etc. It sounds like an excuse to have bad pictures.

Instead of worrying so much about what other peoples pictures look like why not worry about how to make your pictures better?

I've come to believe that in some ways it's rating itself that's a bit silly. If you don't

believe me, try this:

1. Take a photo without looking through the viewfinder of any old thing at all.

2. Do some stupid photoshop thing to it. Like making a curves adjustment by

randomly drawing on it with the curves pen tool. Or applying a heavy "fresco" filter.

3. Post it in the critique forum.

4. Be amazed that it gets fairly simillar ratings to the rest of your stuff. Even the worst

possible photo you could ever take will get you at least a 3/3 rating.

I recently posted a series of photos (I'll admit I personally think some are much better

than others) that were professionaly styled with a pro-model. Each one was thought-

out, planned, and nailed down untill I got exactly what I wanted. The whole shoot

took eight hours. And only one of the shots seems to break a 5. Go figure.

IMO, I think there should be an option to bar ratings on your stuff and leave it to

actual critique. I'd much rather have someone tell me why they like or dislike my work

than say it's 4.

Following is my suggestion/opinion to improve the working of photonet-

1.Every body can not be rater, there must be some way of checking this . Initially allow a member to rate some photographs , say 10, analyse his/her ratings and then if he/she qualifies ( as per the opinions of the experts ) , he / she becomes a rater. A sort of examination system.

or,

let photonet experts have a permanent set of raters. They will only rate.

2.How many members are there in the photonet without any contribution, that is either they have not posted any photographs or participated constructively in any forum? What is the visiting profile of the members , how many of them visit photonet once a month , once every two months or more rarely ?

You must have some system of getting rid of the garbage.

3.Create another subscription segment say 10$ yearly so that that can be paid through draft also. You can enlarge subscriber base that way. FFrankly speaking , 25$ per year is little high for Indian currency.

Somebody might have appointed himself as the photo.net "truth squad" with the mission of letting everyone on the site know just how pathetic their photos really are. In theory such ratings would, in some twisted way, be "honest". We still don't want that person around, and the ratings (and the user) would be deleted, being indistinguishable operationally from a troll.

But he IS still around. Trolling away . . . But that's OK. Hell, this net has never has been perfect - and you guys work so hard for very little reward. God bless you.

Hey Somebody! Get a freaking life. Make a program to cross reference ratings? What are you looking for crooks? Whats wrong crybaby you dont like your ratings under your real name so do this. You must think people are as stupid as you. Your a new member on March 9th and your instantly pissed off at the rating system! Wow you will never be a spy. Now go to the zoo or something, get your mind off this traumatic situation. Your real identity is a little obvious you better change your name again.
