rui_duarte
I'm using an Canon 10D (still have film cameras but I just stop using them) and I just sold my Canon 28-135 IS USM to buy an wide-angle zoom lens. I also have Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX and Canon 400mm L 5.6.So wich lens should I buy? Canon 17-40 L? Or Sigma 15-30?I can get them for almost the same price, so that wouldn't be a point to compare. For me it's more important quality and I don´t care for weight (if Canon it's lighter then Sigma...)I'm planning to travel to S.Tomé and Principe (above equador line, islands in Guiné Golf), so I really need it!!!Can you up there give me an help??? janez_pelko
I have Sigma 15-30 and my friend has Canon 17-40. Sigma in sot that bad, but compared to Canon it is awful, especially at corners. Digital camera cuts this corners, but difference is still huge.
rob_murray
Same price? Go with the Canon! In 3 years when you want to buy another lens the Canon will still have good value the Sigma will be worth very little since by then Canon will have done something to the newer cameras to screw up Sigma lenses once again. bellavance
Rui, I have chosen the Canon 17-40/4L and I really like its sharpness. When you have a choice, I suggest you buy Canon lenses to lessen the risk of incompatibility with your next camera. Have a nice trip. I'll be bringing mine to Alaska in June. wilfred_m_rand
Awesome lens. I went to the pro shop to buy the Canon, spent a few hours comparing it with several lenses, and walked out with the Tamron. A lot of the images in my pbase gallery were shot with this lens. The March 2004 Popular Photography & Imaging raves about this lens, and their sqf numbers place it equal to or slightly better than their previous sqf's on the Canon 17-40L. Just a thought. http://www.pbase.com/wilfredmrand
vincent_j_m
I tested the Sigma with a film body, my EOS-3 and Sensia 100 film. The colors were saturated but had a severe warm cast. Sharpness was OK in the center towards f/8 but soft wide open. Sharpness and definition were very bad towards the edges and corners. I couldn't get it to give me a decent full frame picture at any aperture and focal length. I'd go with the Canon. The Sigma may be OK for DSLR's though, since you can do color balancing and the 1.6 fov crop.
