john_sarsgard1
Recently saw a wonderful show at the Richard York Gallery in NYC of New England work by Paul Strand and paintings by his friend John Marin. It's titled "John Marin and Paul Strand: Friends in New England." It's up until January 10, so if you're in Manhattan and like either or both (as I do!) it's quite a few pictures from each, and great to see. The Gallery is also quite accessible, on E 65th near Madison. Now a question...other than buying a very expensive copy of Strand's "Time in New England," does anyone know of another source of Strand's beautiful nature closeups? There were many the show, and I would love to find a book that showed off more. Thanks.

brian_ellis3
I could be mistaken but I don't remember "Time in New England" as having many nature closups. However, if you're interested in that book I believe there was a second printing of "Time in New England" not too many years ago with much better reproductions than the original and less expensive. art_haykin
Go to Google.com and key in Used Book Finders: you'll find 50,000 sites of book sellers, both independent and brokers representing scores of sellers. I visited just one and found your book selling from about 60 to 150 bucks. A thorough search is bound to turn up a bargain. The hunt is the thing. michael_chini
The Aperture book, The World on My Doorstep, has numerous examples of his later work but there is no comprehensive book that contains what you're looking for. Try abebooks.com. In the Paul Strand Essays book, his printer Richard Benson (in Strand's later years) also discusses Strand's techniques and mentions that he believes his garden photographs to be among Strand's best. rj__
John, I'll be in NY over the holidays. I want to see some of Strand's work and 65th and Madison is very convenient to where I'll be staying. Thanks.
merg_ross
The original "Time in New England", published in 1950, has 106 reproductions of which 15 to 20 could be considered nature closeups. The reproducrions are not particularly good, in my opinion, but probably worth the $6.00 jacket price.
geoffrey_james
There are some good pictures of ferns and other plants in his beautiful garden in Orgeval in the 2-volume Aperture monograph . I went to interview him there in 1968, and he told me had discovered that if the wind comes up during a time exposure, you can always cover up the lens, and then the wind dies down, the grass and leaves will be in exactly the same place. One remembers the stupidest things.
