Burning Digital Pics to CD in Thailand & Cambodia

I'm going to Bangkok, Koh Smaui and Angkor Wat in August for my

honeymoon, and I'm going to be taking my Canon 10D. So lots of

pics :-). I'd like to know if there are any places in Bangkok, Siem

Reap and Koh Samui where I can burn images from my compact flash

cards on to CR-ROM?

In Bangkok we're staying near the New Petchburi Road. In Koh Samui

we're in the North Chaweng area. In Siem Reap I'm not sure what area

we're staying in!

Thanks,

Dave.

Hi,

You probably won't get anything in Siem Reap. I was there last November and there is little or no infrastructure there. (My guide was proud of the new street lighting they had just installed!) Angkor Wat is unmissable. It will be the highlight of your trip by a long way. (Remember to take two passport size photos of yourself for entry into Cambodia. If you don't take them they have a polaroid camera and will take them for you but the whole immigration thing will take much longer. The visa also costs but I can't remember how much).

Koh Samui is very much a tourist place. I haven't been there for several years but I would be surprised if you got anything there.

Your best bet by a long way is Bangkok. Try Panthip Plaza, Hollywood IT centre (both in the Pratunam area opposite the Amari Watergate hotel) or perhaps MahboonKhrong(sp?) known locally as MBK.

Regards...

I am in agreement with Siem Reap. Things are still very basic there. Bangkok's your best bet. Lots of places to burn CDs there. But, having said that, if you are into ruins, etc., Angkor is going to be the place where you are going to be shooting a lot of pictures. I was shooting Velvia and was limited to the number of rolls that I took...which was 20. I ran out! Depending on the resolution you wish to shoot, you'll need a lot of MBs. A portable cd burner would certainly be the best solution. You might check with steves-digicam.com and see which ones he has tested and/or recommends. Congratulations on your honeymoon!

Hi! My first post ever to Photo.net, having lurked for a couple of days reading this & that :-)

In Bangkok/Koh Samui, you'll have no trouble - even some photo labs might do it for you, I suppose - but internet cafe's are usually helpful.

I spent a month in Siem Reap in Febrary/March 2002, while my wife assisted an archeological team there. CD burning is no problem - go to one of the literally dozens of internet cafes in Siem Reap and one of them will surely help you. I can personally recommend Bayon Web, on the main road - I went into their place every day with my laptop & they let me plug into their network at no higher cost than just sitting behind one of their own machines. I continued to correspond with one of the employees there for several months afterwards, but not sure if he's still there now. They did have a CD burner, too - I didn't need it, but others were using it. Bring your own blank CD/R's; the ones they have are probably not great quality.

One caveat: the person I corresponded with indicated some kind of change to the way internet services were supplied from Telecom Cambodia, which was threatening their business. The bulk of their customers were coming in to use internet telephony, and I think this was the reason for the crackdown. It could well be that the number of internet cafes is now reduced in places like Siem Reap as a result of that - there were literally dozens there when I was there. Incidently, the speed & quality of the lines were first-rate.

By the way, my gallery of images from that time is here:

I used a coolpix 950 at the time, but want to return with my D60 some day soon :-)

Finally, have a beer and a game of billiards at the "Angkor What?" bar for me!

All,

Thanks for the replies :-). As it turns out, I've found out that I have a little more money available than I'd originally thought, so I can afford to get a portable CD writer. This has the advantage that I can use it as a CD writer for my fiance's PC too :-).

Kai,

I had a look through your pictures - there's some really nice ones there :-). I'm really looking forward to going there!!!

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi,

in Bangkok it should not be a problem to get your pictures on a CD. For 200 to 300 Baht (around 8 USD) even small minilabs will burn you a CD. Usually takes one day, sometimes less.

Koh Samui is a very tourist oriented place. I think on Chaweng Beach you should find such kind of service, too.

Have a beautiful honeymoon,

Timo
