jorge_prat
Has someone used the Ries C600 tripod for 4x5 field camera. This tripod is much cheaper than the J100, but i don´t know if I can use it with my wooden field 4x5, since it only supports 14lbs. Maybe it is the streaped down version of the J100. Thanks in advance Jorge
jay_lynch
Jorge, It will hold the weight of your camera... But the C600 does not have locking legs like the J100. The legs spread apart and are held by cable. With the J100 you can lock each leg independent of the others. The C100 tripod is lighter then the J100 which is a good thing. hope that helps
tedharris
The C series is a different design than the J series. As already noted it will easily support your camera but has much less flexability. You might also want to look at the J 600, the model that used toi be called the backpacker.
christian_olivet
I use the J100 for my 8x10. It is my most trusted piece of equipment. I am sure you can probably get away with light tripods but man what a feeling of trust I have when I am setting the J100, even with very windy conditions. If you have a feeling that you may be moving to 8x10 with time, buy the J100. If otherwise try the one you mention. I heard that the customer service of Ries is owesome and if you don't like the tripod you can probably send it back and change it for the sturdier one. jorge_prat
Thank you guys for all your help. I think the biggest problem with this model is that there is no image of it abailable anywhere. Ries web site is nice but not very much ilustrative. You actually have to imagine how the tripod may look like. Is like buying blind, especially in my case, since I can only buy using internet. jim_rice3
I would second Christian's advice. While I haven't put an 8x10 (yet) on my J-100, it is *very* sturdy, and the leg locking has to be used to appreciated. IMO a Ries without that feature isn't a Ries. jerry_hyman2
Jorge, you might also want to look at the Berlebach tripods. I just recently bought one from HP marketing for I believe under $175 and what a tripod for the money. The model I bought comes with a leveling head that allows me to direct mount my 4X5 field camera and have ample movements to about 30 degrees. It acts like a ball head and is very secure. This allows me to leave my tripod head at home and also reduces the weight of the tripod and head to about 7 lbs but it will support a 26 pound load. The tripod is beautifully made (both the ash wood and the metal fittings) and again I couldn't believe the quality for the money. I also looked at the Ries tripods and they are really beautifully made but the cost was substantially higher. Anyway it might be worth a look.
