Alternatives to velvia and provia ie print film

Recommended Posts

Agree mostly on previous posts. I shoot reala (strictly printed on frontier machine and fuji crystal archive paper) medium/35mm formats as a substitute to velvia and provia. Velvia has more cooler, saturated colours than reala and provia is almost same as reala in many situations. Although since I shoot reala always at EI80, i find it little bit brighter, which is better. There is really no substitute to velvia in print films as far as I know. Forget the lattitude etc properties, velvia color pallet itself is so unique in its colors. On the other hand as last poster says, I find that films like kodak Gold 100 or supra 100 are pretty saturated and lot warmer than fuji counterparts but they start to show their grain soon.

I would just like to say that i really appreciate your help guys. All i really want is a print i can show my friends and for them to say "Oh wow the colours are so intense" and i would like to scan and enlarge the prints aswell. So from what has already been posted i assume that i could be safe in shooting fuji superia 100 to get the results i am after?

If you look at film resolution, then Velvia, as far as I know, is the "winner" among slides, with a resolution on up to 80 l/mm in "real world contrast" pictures. Provia on the other hand is only able to record 60 l/mm. Surprisingly the print film Reala 100 iso, is capable of recording 63 l/mm! So looking only at resolution, Reala could be a good alternative to Provia. I use both Provia and Reala, and I think that the Reala produces some wonderful colour but thats my subjective opinion!
