How can I determine the value of a 100 year old Globica 1 camera?

My uncle was a professional photographer for Bosch for 35 years. He

just showed me one of the cameras he used to use at work. It is a

Pentacon Globica 1 in excellent condition. This is an 8x10 format

camera which stands about 4 feet high and opens up to about 4 feet

long. Does anyone know how much this camera may be worth, or how I

could determine its value?

I don't know anything about this camera, but it sounds from your description like a large stand-mounted studio camera. My unscientific observation is that when this type of thing occasionally goes up for auction on Ebay there is little market for it. Given that there is probably no reference from which you can find a value, there may be no way other than by selling it and finding out what someone will pay.

From your description, I got the same impression that Chris did - that the camera is a stand-mounted studio camera. If that impression is accurate, you may have better luck (better price) dealing through non-photographic channels. My suggestion would be to contact an antiques appraiser to see if you can get some feedback related to non-photographic auction prices for such things. For example, the camera may be more valuable to a decorator than to a currently-working commercial photographer or camera collector.

If it is really a PENTACON Globica, its not that old, although its construction as a studio stand camera is ancient. VEB Pentacon was a GDR company, so it would have been made after WWII - although it is likely it was based on a prewar model. The last Globicas were sold off shortly after the German unification in 1990.

stefan:

see if you can find yourself a copy of James & Joan McKeown's "Price Guide to Antique

& Classic Cameras". it is pretty much the camera collectors bible .. and most likely

will list information on the camera.

best of luck!

Hi,

I bought a similair Globica some years ago with lens, wooden film holders and some other acccesorries. I paid about 200 Euro and then I was told by many photographers that I paid too much. Here in Slovenia the real value would be about 100 Euro.

Regards,
