New lenses?

Recommended Posts

My guess is that we'll see more lenses available in black paint; otherwise nothing really new until the next Photokina or PMA, since that is traditionally when Leica introduces brand-new products. Then I would expect a new Summilux-M based on the optical cell of the Summilux-R, since the 50 Lux is the oldest lens in the M stable and it would only cost them R&D to engineer an M mount for the Lux-R, the glass is already done.

Jay's response makes me think: why weren't the M/R lenses 50 up to 135 optically identical to each other, except macro, of course. It would seem to be a waste of money, otherwise. Why not produce an 75, 1.4R that is optcally the same as the M-'lux? Same with the 90, although, I heard these are identical.

Some of them are, like the late 90mm Elmarit-R and the 135mm Elmarit-R. I see an advantage for the R system in faster lenses and 50mm lenses in that the R mount has a much wider throat than the M so that lenses can be optimized for a larger exit pupil. For the same reason I doubt the current 50mm Summilux-R can be adapted successfully to the M because of the smaller M mount diameter.

For those who received " Yhe Lens Book" from leica, read the fine print on the "Billinghasm" coupon. Only good on lenses introduced BEFORE 9/01/2003. No doubt it will not be long before we are treated to something new AND expensive. My opinion :a new 50 MM Summilux.
