Hello, next week I am going on a trip and I would like to know if

anyone could tell me of a good color print film to use. I am new to

color film (I started in photography recenlty and have worked with

black and white film, mostly T-Max). Anyway I was looking for a film

to shoot everything, something that could give me nice colors. I

wan't to use a saturated film but not one that would make peoples

skin look horribly red. I was considering buying Reala, but theres

alot of different opinions. So can anyone help me find a great

general purpose film (not like Kodak GOld though).... Thank you

Why not Kodak Gold 100? 200 or 400, no. But Gold 100 is one great color negative film. Good skin tones, good colors without being over-saturated. And cheap too. I get all mine from B&H (imported). $1.79 a roll. Even at twice that it's a good film.

Reala would be a perfect choice, especially if you're shooting with a reasonably fast lens, outdoors, on nice sunny or partly sunny days. If you have a slow lens or if you might be shooting any kind of action or in less than perfect light, you'll really need something in the ISO 400-800 range. Some good choices are Kodak Portra 400UC, Fuji NPH 400, and Fuji NPZ 800. These are pro films so you probably won't find them everywhere. If you need a film that you can find in a drug store or grocery store, then I would recommend Kodak High Definition 400, Fuji Superia XTRA 400, or Fuji Superia XTRA 800.

Hope this helps. Have a nice trip!

I second Reala as an excellent choice as an all-around travel film. After experimenting with Agfa Ultra 50 (discontinued), Kodak Gold and Royal Gold 100, Portra 160 VC/NC and 400 VC/NC (I haven't tried UC yet), NPS, NPH, NPZ, I found that I really like the results from Reala. It handles a wide range of subjects very well. For lower light conditions I either carry a tripod, find things to brace myself against or steady myself as best as I can. I also like to throw in a couple of rolls of NPZ just in case - great results for its speed. I also have a lot of fun using T400CN in my Holga as a travel camera!

Ultimately, though, it comes down to personal preference. I would suggest trying several different films before deciding which one(s) suit you.

Thank you guys for the advice, I took your advise for the most part. I got a few rolls of Reala and a few rolls of Kodak Portra 400UC, along with some Kodak Kodachrome and some Elite Chrome (to experiment and decide which ones I like the best). Thanks for all the help.
