Att: Canadians- which Fuji film is the Loblaws/PC house brand ?

Recommended Posts

I cannot confirm it but I think I have read it in some newsgroup that they (the PC Brands) are actually Fuji Superia Films..

For you info as well, Blacks (in Ontario) film are also Fuji Films (Superia I heard), since they are owned by Fuji anyways.. They sometimes have great deals on 'processing included' film as well.

Likely Superia though possibly not the current version. It's a bit of a false economy, though, Frank, given Loblaw's less-than-stellar processing. There are killer 200-400 Fuji print film promos in Loblaws(at least around the GTA). Costco actually does better budget processing.

Frank: The color looks like Superia but it is a little less saturated. My guess is that Fuji makes a version with a thinner emulsion for cost reduction and private-brands it. Private brands are often the discard bin for manufacturers, where things go that do not meet manufacturers own specs for its brand name products. I can't say however in this case that the PB film was bad. I've decided nonetheless to stay with Superia. PS: I find Zehrs processing quite good and their printing quite acceptable. I have scanned several shots that were previously printed at Zehrs and had to admire the quality of the automatic processing by seeing how well it balanced even difficult negatives which needed adjustments in Photoshop.

Loblaws around me has a special on right now, 5 rolls of superia 200 + 2 free rolls of superia 800. I think it is $12.99 for the pack - BUT it also comes with a $5 instant rebate voucher attached to it, making it almost a buck a roll.. certainly worth looking into!

I haven't shot any of the store-brand film to compare it to, although I wouldn't be surprised if it is fuji, but I doubt it's cut from the same roll as Superia.

There is probably no way in hell the PC Brand film is Reala. It's just too nice a film to

relegated to "house" brand, not to mention more expensive. I've found, once again as

with almost every other photo purchase, it's signigicantly cheaper to buy from the US

for film.

FWIW, Here's a couple reviews of Canadian grocery store processing.

- Zehrs in Ontario ("Photo" brand fuji lab). Hit and miss. Very mediocre printing (there

must be a really cheapo version of Crystal Archive paper). I guess, like any other

mini-lab, it depends on the operator

- Atlantic Superstore in PEI ("Photo" brand fuji lab). Only 1 experience, awful. Sure, it

was portra, but shouldn't someone living in PEI know that PEI dirt is red? White

borders, sure, but having each border the same size apparently needs to be specified.

I've gone to merely getting my local lab (non-box store) dev. only then doing my own

scanning/printing.

There's no chance the loblaws store brand film is Reala. At the very best it is film cut off the ends of the giant reels of superia, if not one of their b-emulsions after superia.

If you want the real reala, you have to pay the real reala price unfortunately. But that being said, if anyone knows a deal on where to get Reala, i'd be interested in knowing ;)

Loblaws film is re-branded Fuji Super G and old emulsions of Superia which do not match up to the current ones. Almost all re-branded Fuji films in Canada match this same pattern. The only exception that I know of is the Black's house-brand film, which is always concurrent to the most recent version of Superia. It's also pretty cheap in multi-packs compared to the Fuji.

No one sells re-branded Reala.

Similiar to the Loblaws story, I got a great deal on Fuji film from Walmart, but now I have 12 rolls sitting in a drawer because it really wasn't close to the standard I get from Blacks for my everyday film.

In response to the last question as to where to get a good deal on Reala, try Vistek in Toronto, www.vistek.ca, there is a Fuji pic near the bottom to click on for the Pro sale. I ordered some and I don't see any difference from the Reala I bought locally. The prices are really good, $7.19 if you buy 5 rolls, $6.69 if you buy 20. The other Fuji Pro films are on sale too.
