Photo Labs in Hawaii

Can anyone recommend some good processing labs in Hawaii? In about 6

weeks I'll be travelling to Maui (Lahaina area), Kauai (South Shore)

and Hawaii (Kona coast)in that order. Instead of playing the X-ray

game at airport security, I thought of having my film processed on

the island that I'm visiting. For this trip, I'm planning on only

shooting 35mm and most likely Portra 400UC. I've searched the

archives, but most posts are several years old. Any recommendations

would be appreciated.

I don't know how fussy you are about processing labs. If very, then I'd recommend that you simply ask for visual check on your film and wait until you get home to have them processed. Or, you can get prepaid mailers (Fuji, Kodak, etc.) and send them air mail to the mainland for processing. This way they'll be waiting for you when you get home from the trip. Myself, since I live in Honolulu, I've been taking my film (usually E6 Velvia) to Long's Drugs. They're about as ubiquitous in Hawai'i as Starbuck's is on the West Coast. They'll give you a choice of Kodak or Fuji or Long's processing. I usually take the Long's option...and I've never been disappointed. Most of their service is overnight.

I use A&I when I travel - they're a quality dip & dunk lab and you can buy their mailers from B&H for $5.49 apiece. If you do this your slides will probably be waiting for you when you get home.

I send my film to them by FedEx; that costs about $15 for 50 rolls. If you want to send less film at a time Priority Mail is more economical; you can get 13 rolls into a one pound package, which will cost you $3.85 (vs $10 or so by FedEx). You can find FedEx drop boxes at 505 Front Street in Lahaina (Maui) and at the shopping mall in Poipu (south shore of Kauai) and a FedEx agent in Kona just around the corner from the Kona Brewing Company. The Pacific Golden Ale is excellent.
BTW, I have a gallery in Lahaina. Stop in and say aloha if you get the chance.
Karl Lehmann Lost World

Sorry, I should have read your question more carefully - I assumed you were asking about E6 film. A&I will also do prints but the mailers for C41 cost about $12 each (I've never tried their printing service but it's probably good).

I rarely shoot C41 but when I do I get it developed at Long's (it costs about $2.50 per roll & takes 45 minutes) then scan the negs myself. You can get excellent digital prints made at Imagine Photo in Honokawai (near Lahaina, on the way to Kaanapali).

For really cheap prints you could go to Costco or Walmart - you'll find both in Kahului (Maui) and Kona (Big Island) but not on Kauai (actually there might be a Walmart on Kauai now, I can't remember).
