peter_lamotte
There are lots of threads about camera insurance... as long as you have renters or property insurance to add it to. Has anyone heard of insurance you can get to cover gear for those like me that have no renters or home owners insurance?
igor_spivak
i reaserched that, because my renters' camera coverage is 500$ (not even close to conver my 4000$ worth of camera crap). so StateFarm has what is known as a floater policy - you can get it for any expensive object, but its only available in certain areas - check with your local StateFarm insurance broker. hope this helps igor'
richard_milner2
In the UK there are several companies that specialise in insurance for camera equipment and/or other 'collectable' type items, such as records - that is, vinyl discs - model soldiers or comics. (In fact, if you have any kind of substantial collection, it can be difficult to insure it adequately as an extension to a standard household policy.) I would be very surprised if there were not similar policies available in the US. Check the adverts in photo mags, and contact an insurance broker. basscheffers
In the UK, there are many insurers that simply insure camera gear and even liability. (ie: the Taj Mahal falls down due to me photographing it, they get a million to rebuild it) Don't know about anywhere else though, but there must be. Check classifieds in the back of photo magazines. henk
In my experience you can arrange any kind of insurance for any piece of equipment in any situation with a good insurance company. There is always a catch with general insurances, which mostly have to do with costly equipment coverage. Alot of insurance companies simply dont insure expensive equipment normally, no matter how high your insurance policy is. I would advice to ask your insurance agency and make proper arrangements for travel and in your home. Greetings,
keithdunlop
I have a commercial photographers policy through http://www.groupinsure.com/ that covers all loss and also provides liability coverage. It's also much better than the equipment protection I have found on most travel insurance policies. Bear in mind, that I travel with Leica's so replacement cost is in the many thousands of dollars. A commercial policy may seem to be overkill for a casual traveling photographer, but be aware that the renter insurance riders are very restrictive, and usually do not cover losses outside the home. And, if you ever file a claim you risk loosing your homeoweners coverage or facing stiff premium increases.
klix
Travel insurance is available from some large insurers in the US - it'll cover medical costs and other things, such as loss of personal effects like your camera equipment. It does cost more than a personal effects rider from your renter's or property insurance company.
ranong
get renter insurance. most companies DO cover your belonging out of teh house, and out of the country. my premium is $125, for $14000 worth of coverage. ask if you need a rider, take photos of your equipment, and have the reciepts, manuals, and warrantt cards. this makes it easier to file your claim. i had my gear stolen while traveling in SE Asia. i obtained a police report, and filed when i got home. they covered my gear with no problem. well worth the 125 bucks. good luck. have fun eddie
