Sault Ste. Marie/ Lake Superior Prov. Pk/Pukaskwa Ntl Pk (Ontario)-Recommendations

Hello.

I'm in Indianapolis and have thought about this trip for a year or

so now. I'm primarily into nature photography, but am always

looking for interesting opportunities when I travel. I'd also like

to find any really good hikes. I'll be tent camping so I can pretty

much handle my own housing ;) Any recommendations would be

appreciated for this trip.

The Canadian Shield and the boreal forest are spectacular. The water is "refreshing". If you're going boating, note that Lake Superior is not to be trifled with. It's beautiful, but can quickly become very, very violent. Take some good insect repellent.

My wife and I are currently paddling from Sault Saint Marie to Thunder Bay. We have just paddled around the coast of Pukaskwa NP, so I know very little about the interior of the park, just the coastline. However I will make one recommendation --- though there is nothing in your question to indicate you may paddle, you may find it worthwhile to paddle 20km west from Michipicoten (near Wawa) to the mouth of the Dog River (also known as the University River), then an arduous 2km paddle/wade/track/pole/walk up the Dog River to a small-ish waterfall. On the right-hand bank, looking upstream, you will see a rope to help you scamble up the side of these falls, and then 100m (or so) round the corner you will find Dennison Falls. Worth the trip.

There is a lovely campsite at the mouth of the Dog River on the lake shore, though there were quite a few bear prints on the sand when we passed by.
