1.
All good comments. Thanks everyone!

 2.
I received it from a colleague who was going FX...and I knew it was suspect. Not worth the repair cost probably. Selling it "as is" right now.

 3.
Eric, it was just soft, in the middle. And almost like it had an astigmatism... blotchy. only lens I had that was like that./

 4.
good grief. it's a 20% crop....talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. Regardless, even this one is 2X sharper than the Nikon lens. Like I said, pretty sure I had a bad copy...doesn't mean apples to apples... the Sigma is better than the Nikon. of course, not

 5.
It has bugged me for over a year. Not so sharp photos coming from my Nikon 17-55 f2.8 DX lens.

I had tried Fine Tuning to the nth degree and to no avail... just started to think that it was just me being too picky.

So...I went ahead and bought a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and today shot a family in the park. Om my God! What an improvement. Sharp as a tack and incredibly rich with good bokeh. Now I see what I was missing and should never have put up with this for so long.

 6.
I have a new lens and just wanted to get your take on the importance (or unimportance) of adding a filter.

Pros and cons?
Thanks

 7.
All great suggestions. I'll try some of these. Appreciate it!

I would like your insight and help/

Lens in question: Nikon DX 17-55 f2.8
Camera bodies tried on: Two D300s and two D7100... sample bad results.
Tried AF fine tune in each (-20 all the way up to +20), no consistent better sharpness.

Only thing I have not tried is adding a filter.

Here is a typical photo. F2.8 in this case...

 9.
I have the DX's Nikon 17-50 f2.8 and Sigma 50-150 f2.8 and that will handle 95% of what I need (sports, outdoor portraits and events)

 10.
White balance set to flash by error??? easy to do that rotating dials, etc. take a look

 11.
No Bob H., not one of those. Back in the 80's, Pentax 35mm.

 12.
Yes, she was tickled. I told her to just play with her son and let the two of them just have fun and that I would work around that. She said she was very happy with all of the photos. :)

 13.
Photographed a woman and her son in the park on Sunday and I really like the upgrade in pixel count and IQ that I am getting with my new D7100 vs my older D300.
So GLAD I took the advice of many on here and took the plunge. :)

 14.
I bought a new D7100 to replace one of my D300's that shutter failed on me... love the D7100... just a bit small for my liking but I guess I will get used to it...even with the battery grip I bought.
