  1. I did. I had it on initially, although never used, but then switched off. Never turned back on in my subsequent experiments, so they were always off. When a card is in the camera, and the camera is in this wrong state (power button is off, but LCD still on and blinking) -- that green light that indicates access to SD card, is on-off-on-off-on-off ... As if the camera is in some sort of loop. When turned off these cameras still want to access the SD card to see how much images are there (so how much card space is left). And it feels as though this check, is the one that's causing the camera to wake up in the 'turned off' state. It is as though, it is supposed to check SD card, and then 'sleep', but it does not -- it goes and turns itself on into this 'zombie' state. The D500 left my premises to visit Nikon repair center -- let's see what they say about this defect.
  2. @kmac -- I have done reset from Menu (reset all settings) and by the 2 green buttons. Several times. What is the process for factory reset (besides the above 2 methods). @mike_halliwell I do not have access to nikon grip, I only have lenses and flashes by Nikon. For the other question, Nikon service did the clean/inspect thing. This was not a service to fix something. Thank you for all the follow ups sofar. If there are any other experiences with this (including how much it might cost fix), or a suggest to try -- would very much appreciate it.
  3. Hello, A Nikon D500 with less than 50K clicks, developed a problem all of a sudden. The camera does not turn off. Turn off switch works. It turns the camera off. But the the camera boots itself back within a second, all the buttons are disabled, just the LCD screen is blinking. Camera was for regular service at Nikon less than 500 clicks ago (but it was in 2021, so there is no '3 month' back return again issue). It seems that I have to send it back, and wait in fear what it might cost to fix. This is clearly a manufacturing / firmware problem. And it is also clear that I am not the only one that has this problem, and it seems (according to my research) affect more than one camera model - therefore it is unlikely to be a problem with D500 specific hardware. There is something that many Nikon DSLRs share, and that hardware component is not well understood by the firmware in the camera. I would like to ask, if anybody had similar issue and if they remember how much it cost to repair (or if they had some DYI magic to fix it). Here are the things I had tried: a) Different batteries b) different SD cards c) Updated to latest 1.31 firmware and latest lenses database e) formatted the SD card multiple times f) reset the camera through menu and by the 2-green buttons pressed together. Several times g) left the camera without battery overnight, hoping that it would 'drain' some capacitors h) removed SD memory card -- so camera was without a card i) tried different lenses to be on the camera while on (thinking that having a Nikon-DX lens mounted would some how inform the camera to reset) j) inspected the area around the power button to see if there is any dirt there -- none. k) cleaned the image sensor(from the menu) and waited till it told me to 'shut camera off' (again thinking that when it tells me to shut it off, may be it also resets something). l) inserted and removed a fully charged battery several times rapidly (thinking that it if there is a timing/synchronization issue between hardware and firmware, causing a hardware interrupt to fire (by inserting the battery) -- I might be lucky enough to clear the malfunction ... did not budge. I reviewed the links and the links these posts refer to (but there is no resolution): https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4127417 https://www.photographytalk.com/forum/nikon-camera-forum-nikon-cameras-lenses-and-accessories/283019-nikon-d500-won-t-shut-off
  4. Yes, I think different folks have different perspective. I think people who tend to be closer to perfection while maintain practicality -- will tend to appreciate more expensive, high quality, yet closed systems. Folks like me would tend to 'wonder around, experiment' while in the process, increasing difficulty of usage, and, probably, reducing quality of output. Like the picture you posted with Zeiss... I liked it, and if I would take it, I would think it is great. :-). But you are right, shadows/blackness is not gradual, and, instead unnaturally digital. My hope is Nikon opens up their lens mount, and make it truly open. I do not think they will loose business if they do that. Instead, I think they will create a multi-tiered ecosystem of not just lenses, but other auxiliary devices, that may even be transformational to the market space...
  5. bgelfand just recently shared an article on dpreview with regards to major Camera manufactures, and how their openness of the lens mount, contributes to lens availability Sony having essentially open lens mount spec, helped tremendously with quality 3rd party lenses. Quality 3rd party lens availability, in turn, it seems, brings in more hobbyist/advance amateur crowd. That, in turn, creates, at least, a perception of long-term system-viability, so people are willing to experiment and invest more (as more than one company builds products for the given mount). So overall, it seems that Sony and L-mount full frame mirroless are better investment for a more people. This is my 'pseudo-scientific' explanation of why folks migrating to Sony. We have D800 and Samsung NX. I felt that Samsung Nx was a bad investment, even though a technically good camera. If I am given a choice, i will not invest into a non-open mount system. I was very interested in Nikon Z7/Z6 but will now hold off, because I am not comfortable investing into a close-mount system. I do not think technical specs (that are relevant to my usage patterns) between Sony and Z-sytems are that much different to justify supporting no-competition-allowed lens mount.
  6. I also have same problem (or similar) with my autoflex T. if anybody could offer any pointers, would very much appreciate
