1.
Hi,
I'd must apologize beforehand for a very basic question about how modern AF works, esp. in regard to the interface on most cameras. Having just acquired a TechArt Pro AF adapter for a Sony A7 II for M-mount, I'm suddenly using AF for the first time ever (if you don't count the very intuitive Hexar AF).

So, first of all, if I have it on AF-S, it focuses only when I press half-way down on the shutter button. And if my subject moves, I need to release and press half-way down again to capture the new focus, correct? If on AF-C, whatever is in the active focus patch or point will always be in focus (provided the subject and its movement are within the limitations of the AF system)?

And I can lock the focus and re-compose? Currently, the focusing patch is in the very center of the frame, and I believe I'm able to focus, lock it in, and recompose the shot.

How does one use all the other focus spots in the frame- should one? How is it advantageous?

My subject? An active pre-schooler.
Thanks in advance!

 2.
I recently upgraded the firmware (to v 3.1 I think) for a Sony A7ii, enabling it to produce uncompressed RAW files (.ARW).

What on a Mac (OS 10.10) can read them, and what photo editing software do people recommend? Note, I'm a total newbie at "serious" photo editing software- the most processing I've done is with Photos (iPhoto). I'd like to take advantage of this uncompressed RAW format (read: better dynamic range), but, uh, not too much-- i.e., I hope not too get too sucked into it. Just something where I can adjust contrast and exposure, dodge and burn (do people do that à la digital?)? And do B&W.

And a good resource to dip my toe into this- like, what I do with histograms and curves, and other tools... How do they help?

Thanks in advance-

 3.
Hi,
I'm thinking of taking the plunge into FF digital with the A7ii. Up to now I've been shooting (lately very, very little) 35mm film, and have a few Leica M lenses (35mm/2 Asph, 50/2, 90/2.8), VC 15mm/4.5, and a bunch of Pentax manual focus lenses (20/4, through 70-210/f4). Lately I've been using my iPhone to document my life (including my toddler) and while it's uber convenient and not shabby for landscapes and web sharing, I'm loathe to continue using it as my sole camera. Other than photos of my kid, I like landscape, travel and street photog, and portraits (of people I know usu.).

I care about wide dynamic range, small size, the ability to shoot shallow DoF; and the ability to use some of my older lenses is quite appealing (I understand some wide angle RF lenses on the A7 are problematic, taking advantage of neither the sensor nor the glass).

I'd like to get at least one AF lens (to chase around said toddler). The FE 35mm/2.8 ZA (?- not sure on the nomenclature) seems to have some detractors complaining about vignetting and slow focus. I'd prefer not to repeat focal lengths I have already, but want at least one decent AF lens to go with it. I tend to like primes, largely for their size, and, for my vintage of eqpt, IQ, and also b/c I just have 1 zoom, and usually use it at its extremes.

Any suggestions appreciated. (And I've have been way, way overthinking this...)

 4.
Thanks for everyone's input. I looked at the Nikon D750 and D610 today. Huge.
On the K5ii or K5iis:
1. what kind of fiddling is needed to shoot with SMC (aka P...?), SMC-M, and SMC-A lenses? I seem to recall needing to stop down on the *ist-D when using any pre-FA lens.
2. anyone know if it's possible to mount a Cosina Voigtlaender Leica screw mount (LTM) lens on Pentax bodies, namely the 1st gen. 15mm/4.5 uncoupled?

 5.
Thanks for the responses. Re: FF vs APS-C, I wonder if might make sense to start with a decent APS-C and FF lenses, so that I have the option of moving to the system's FF body later.

That begs the question- why not reinvest in AF FF Pentax lenses...

 6.
Over the years I built a modest collection of Pentax manual focus lenses, and thought to wait for Pentax to come out with a FF DSLR (which it's rumored to do in late 2015). But does it make sense to base a DSLR investment decision on old MF lenses, as wonderfully heavy, compact, metallic, oh, and good, they are?

I need AF to chase my toddler son around- and I'm sick of using my smartphone for all our family shots, tho' I love the workflow of the latter- most of our sharing is online, with some rare big printing. I like good dynamic range, bokeh, classic UI (aperture ring, etc.), all in a small package. And don't need every focal length under the sun.
Anyone else in the same boat- having invested in 1970s-80s lenses- how did you happily to join the 21st c.?

Any thoughts welcome.

 7.
I wonder if anyone has regretted leaving Pentax for Nikon or Canon?

I've been in a DSLR conundrum for the last decade or so: I own a number of MF Pentax primes (including the 135/2.5, 85/1.8, 100M/4). I also have the *ist-d, I think, but rarely use it. I've loved my Pentax gear, and as recently as a couple years ago depended on it for a safari in Tanzania. I now want to get digital for the workflow (w/o spending gobs of time post-processing). And we share mainly online, and print big rarely. It seems sensors are really quite good now. And I was loathe to part with my lenses, hoping some day for the Pentax FF DSLR.

But it's occurred to me to base a DSLR investment on old, non-Af lenses doesn't make a whole lot of sense. So I'm ready to get off the sidelines and plunge into getting a modern DSLR, and am leaning toward Nikon. The Df is what started me thinking this way.

FWIW, I care about low light, dynamic range, and bokeh; I would like a more classic UI (aperture ring, e.g). I don't need to have every focal length from 15mm to 1500mm covered.
So I wanted to know if anyone has left Pentax for Canikon an regretted it? I feel my photography has been at a standstill these last few years- relegated to my smartphone :( And with a toddler, I do need better tools, including AF.

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks for reading!
