1. Dear Mr. Orsetto, Sorry for tagging onto an old thread, but I have a question about the patterned white haze on the Mamiya TLR lenses. I just looked at a nice C220 for sale. The 80mm 2.8 lens it comes with looked very clear at first, but when I angled it offset from a light source, I could see a faint, fuzzy, white pattern on the convex surface of an internal element. It wasn’t straight lines, like your sample photo. It was not a fingerprint, but reminded me of a fingerprint in that most of the pattern was concentric with gaps between concentric lines. All very subtle, but enough to concern me. Could this be the type of haze you describe? Or perhaps something worse? It’s a nice camera at a good price. The other problem the lens has is that at the slow shutter speeds ( I tried half-second) the shutter opened, but didn’t close. Perhaps that can be fixed following the steps you so kindly and beautifully illustrated for us.
2. Bought this Mamiyaflex Automatic A at the most recent camera show in Tokyo from the “junk” table. About $20. Finishing the second roll this weekend. Had the first roll of Fujicolor Pro 160NS developed and, unfortunately, very low contrast, muted colors, blooming highlights. Suspect fungus or cloudiness on an inside lens element. Other than that : ), I love the look of the 80mm on a square format.
3. No trouble at all. Too bad they changed that interface. I have to remember that there was a “Standard,” in addition to the Super 23,” and the “Universal.” Tom
4. Yahoo auction number s595484217. The URL I entered didn’t come out in the post.
5. That project sounds very cool. I bought some sheet film holders that fit my Horseman (mostly Graflok standard). They take “2 1/4 x 3 1/4”, as well as “2.5 x 3.5” sheet film. I’d like to try Jason Lane’s dry plates in it some day. I think “one-sixth plate” size fits. He also will make custom sizes. Challenge is that his plates are ISO 2.
6. Dan, Thanks. It’s really good to know that my range of choices is a bit broader than I thought. The Convertible has a removable lens board. Although only one lens was ever made for it, I have seen a picture and a description of a lens, in a different shutter and helical, mounted on a plastic board that slides into the Convertible’s mount. That inspired me. If the rear elements don’t extend into the space between the board and film, a lens could be mounted on a board and it will slide in and out, like the original lens/board. Alternatively, I could fabricate a board that stays in place, but would accept the Mercury Works 3D printed parts - spacers, helical for view lens in shutters or the 3D printed Mamiya Press mount. I could also use the Mercury camera body and I’m done once I get the lens. I often wonder if I should have just bought a nice 6x9 folder, or a press camera, or a Makina, but I‘m enjoying learning about cameras, lenses and this relatively new world of 3D printing. 3D printing materials accessible to the hobbyist are perhaps not the best for cameras, but they can work with proper design. I thank all the folks who share their knowledge and experience on these fora.
7. I was looking at a Mamiya Press manual — online PDF was linked to the camera wiki — and I saw that an eyepiece extender was mentioned. I believe they said it was for use with the Polaroid back, but would be more generally useful. I’ve never seen one of them, though. Regarding the lens adaptation, I agree with you. I would be very happy with the Mamiya lenses on a Mamiya press camera. I’m adapting the lenses to a different camera. The Mamiya helical would just be an intermediate step. There are other routes. Odds are I will end up using a Mamiya press lens on my camera.
8. <\p> Thanks for that bit of information. I have parts for a Mercury Works 3D printed camera, including a mount for Mamiya Press and a helical that takes view lenses. The camera back is Graflok standard. There are a variety of spacers available.
9. Excuse the reply to an old post, but I hope you could tell me more about your adaptation of Bronica lenses to Mamiya Press lens mounts. In particular, will these Bronica lenses (e.g. Nikon Nikkor P 75mm f/2.8 Zenza Bronica Lens) cover 6x9? 6x7? I am looking for a relatively fast (f2.8 - f3.5), relatively normal (80mm - 127mm) lens that will cover 6x9 wide open. I have been looking at the following: 1. 80mm f2.8 Zeiss Planar for Graflex XL (some vignetting at 6x9, I hear, but pictures on Flickr look mostly fine) 2. 100mm f2.8 Mamiya Press (Planar clone). Excellent lens I hear. Not cheap. Single coated. 3. 100mm f3.5 Mamiya Press. (Tessar clone?). Not quite like the Planar & variants. Newest iteration is multicoated. Price good. 4. 100mm f2.8 Zeiss Planar. Expensive. One variable I don't have a handle on is the relative size and weight of these lenses. It is potentially a concern. I would be modifying these lenses to fit on a Horseman Convertible -- a fairly compact MF camera using Horseman backs. I'd like one lens for this camera that would allow me to take some pictures at a reasonable shutter speed handheld. The standard lens, a 62mm Horseman is maximum f5.6, and f11 for 6x9 coverage. Thanks!
10. I know this is a very old thread. Any chance you could repost the document? Im not able to see the attachment. Thank you.
