1.
Thanks for the information,
I use mainly manual focus
I will play around with all the advise you all gave me, at least I here that my macro lens is not that bad as I thought. I did however got some good macro photos with the lens in the past.
I must maybe try to do a snake shoot in the studio, since I know that photos is as sharp as it will be with the light.
Regards

 2.
I did try that aswell, not with the photo I post, but it did not look any better

 3.
Good day all

Here is a photo of a snake I post

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205612134841062&set=pcb.10153039391951043&type=1&permPage=1

I cant seem to get the photos sharp

I use my Sigma Mcaro 105mm lens, Iso 500, F16, S160, I shoot Raw and Jpeg.
I tried my Nikon 70-300mm and 18-105mm
I use flash and no flash.
I even bumped my fstop up to 22.

I know a tripod will work better, but is is hard when you lay on the ground close to venomous snakes to use one.

I do not care if the whole body is not sharp, but at least the part that is of the ground.

Will i do better with a fix 50mm lens maybe.

Or does anyone have something else in mind I can try

Regards

 4.
Thanks for all the responses.

I used my macro lens this weekend and set the ISO to 2500 without a flash and it performed great, I got good portrait pictures.
So I was very happy and the SIgma performed well with sharp images.
I also spoken to Austin Stevens, and his reply make sense, I think I must invest in a wide angle lens next.

I don't think one lens would be enough on any given day, if you want the prefect shot and will be in the field all day, ons must just man up and carry a bag pack with lenses.

:-)

 5.
Handheld yes
ISO - 500
s - 250 untill 640
f - 7 until 16
which make macro without a flash, dark images

 7.
Good day all

May I please get a view point from other people.
I focus on reptile photography, more closely on snakes.
I have my own and also take photos of them on field trips and holiday, venomous mostly, I get really close sometimes like 30cm.
I want a all purpose lens with sharp image quality.

I have a Nikon 18-105mm and a 70-300mm, I tend to find the 18 - 105mm works great but the images could have been sharper.
But I also bought a sigma 105mm macro,.

No my problem is, the macro is not fast enough to photograph moving snakes , I do not know if it is just me, since every guide I read on the Internet recommends the maco lens although the images is very sharp.

What would you say and what lens would you recommend.
I do not make money out of it, I am just a serious hobby photographer and herpetologist.
