Snake in the grass

A garter snake outside of my office.
  2. I like this shot a lot, but think it might be more powerful with an "X" of tape over her other nipple and pubic area. On occasion, "less is more" and it would make a statement that way.

    Caterpillars Hatching

A combo of nature and macro, showing little 1.5mm long caterpillar hatchlings and others still hatching from their eggs. Shot without a "real" macro lens by just inverting an old manual focus 50mm lens over the front of an AF 50mm and getting in close and trying to be planar.

    Caterpillars Hatching

A very opportunistic shot taken without a "real" macro lens, but improvised by holding an old 50mm f1.8 backward over the 50mm f1.8 AF lens on the camera, and getting within 20mm of the subject to capture details of just-hatched caterpillars and the eggs.

  8.
Those images look like normal RAW files when viewed in Photoshop. Adobe doesn't apply D-Lighting settings that Nikon cameras do. I've found that I tend to get better results pre-processing files in ViewNX2 or CaptureNX and then exporting as a TIFF for use in PS or Lightroom. I really don't care much for Adobe's importer.

  9. The composition is there - but it is just way too grey.
  10. Perfect execution and a great scene. 7 out of 7.

    DSC_5212.JPG

The shot itself is just fine. The foreground grass is interesting and the scene has good depth of field behind her. However, it is way too washed out - flare maybe? A slight straightening and bumping contrast makes the shot a lot better.

    Faun

Nice snap, though the framing is off a little. Cutting off the ear, and a little too much foreground grass throw it off just a bit.
  13.
I second Andrew's suggestion. For kids, a "fast 50" is just about ideal as it gives a touch of stand-off distance. My D5100 usually has that lens mounted about 90% of the time nowadays. The 18-55mm kit lens is really good as well, but is a bit slow in some lighting and the DOF is sometimes excessive.

  14.
ViewNX2 is very underrated in terms of its capabilities. Sure, it isn't as nice as Lightroom and saving is s-l-o-w, but otherwise it is pretty good. Unless I need to eliminate noise, I use it instead of LR most of the time.
