  1. Thanks Steve. OK, I feel like I have the operation of the software all figured out, even if I don't understand the effects of the lens corrections (DLO, etc.) However now I'm noticing that every time I decide I like the edits and save a JPG, it will save, but then crash. I'm also getting a dialog quite often (every 30 minutes?) complaining about an internet connection cannot be reached, or something like that. Hitting "Try Again" just makes the dialog open again instantly, while the other option ("Close"? I forget) makes DPP crash. In both cases, I still have at least 1GB of free memory. While DPP's memory use spikes up and down like crazy, it seems to "only" spike by 600MB and I don't think memory is the problem. (If nothing else, once a JPG is saved you'd expect memory requirements to be a bit less, not to increase.) I'm also seeing basically no effect of dual pixel focus shift, on some 180mm macro shots of cherry blossoms, whether at f/3.5, or f/8 or f/32. I **do** see bokeh shift in some photos so I can tell the dual pixel data is doing something. What scenarios is focus shift most notable? E.g., long lenses? short lenses? high f-stops? Low f-stops?
  2. Apologies if discussed before--I did a search but didn't see actual explanations of this in any of the hits. I understand the aberrations of distortion, chromatic aberration, diffraction, vignetting. What does Digital Lens Optimizer do other than correct the above? When would it be preferred to the controls to fix the individual aberrations? What what does its slider adjust? What is "Color blur" (as seen on DPP4.9)? Is there any good reference for this stuff? The DPP 4.9 manual and EOS R manual don't seem helpful.
  3. I hate learning new software and stick to Photoshop CS4, but I need to use DPP to open the CR3 files, and my special/only interest in DPP is Lens Corrections. (After doing that I'd like to move the image over to PS where I have 20+ years of muscle memory and expertise with). Is there a better forum for issues with this software than this site? I'm using 4.9.20.0. For reasons that can't be helped I have to use it on Windows 7 32-bit. (I can't change the OS as my day job requires this.) I'm working through the manual, and the questions I've got so far are: -- Preview Window: I used focus points, highlight/shadow warning, and properties a couple times, but they've become greyed-out and insensitive, both on the right-click menu and on the Preview Control Panel. The options to "show only edited images," "arrange horizontally," and "pin and compare images (horizontal)" are likewise greyed-out. The grid and zoom buttons/menu entries continue to be available and work fine. Restarting DPP makes them again available. [sOLVED: these aren't available when Lens Correction palette is visible. It makes no sense to me that even looking at these controls means the Preview Window has to work differently.] -- preventing multiple Preview Windows: I only want one at once I think but when I double-click a second thumbnail, I get a second Preview Window. Any way to disable this? -- how to A/B the changes quickly? I check something in Lens Correction... machine whirs for 10 seconds... Preview Window is updated... I think... I don't see a change so I uncheck something in Lens Correction.... machine whirs for 10 seconds... Preview Window I assume changes again but maybe I blink and miss it... [sOLVED: the weirdly named "Show only original images"/"Show only edited images" button, labelled 1 or 1*, does this. I'd suggest "original version" "edited version" as the current name sounds like it's a filter] -- on Lens Correction, what is the difference between Digital Lens Optimizer and the individual controls for Diffraction and Chromatic Abberation? Does DLO simply turn on D and CA together or does it do something more, or less? What does the slider for DLO adjust--is it the same as the CA slider? (my inability to figure out how to quickly A/B means I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure this out myself) -- when using the Preview Window I get a readout of XY and RGB, similar to the Photoshop Info dialog. When I instead have the Preview inside the main window using say View Vertical Thumbnails, is there a way to see this? DPP developer hint: why not put that info on the Preview Control Panel and save a lot of screen real estate. -- I know View-->Filter Sort Pane, but is there a way to remove the Filter controls entirely? (Filter On/Off/Lock, Sort by:, Direction)? -- Is there a way to remove the "Edit Image" "Quick Check" "Remote Shooting" button bar? [sOLVED: the tiny up-triangle just above these will hide these controls, but still leaves you with a tiny down-triangle, whose presence wastes a few pixels' height across the entire window. Likewise the file-browser and tools palette can also be hidden but even hidden waste screen space with the albeit thin bar holding a triangle to re-display them. Note you can View-->Dock/Float-->Tool palette, but even when there's nothing docked on the right side of the screen it still wastes screen space with an entire vertical button area with just the left-triangle button greyed out. developer suggestion: if the only button on a tool area is greyed-out, why not just hide that tool area?] -- of all buttons on the Preview Control Panel, the "pin and compare" button is greyed-out. The manual makes it sound as if it'd always be available. Under what circumstances should it be grey? -- toggling Lens Correction Color Blur on/off causes 10-second CPU spike then display changes subtly. There's no hourglass, and the microscopic "working spinny thing" doesn't appear in the lower-right-hand of the Preview Window, though it seems to be working, right? How to tell when this control has actually taken effect and we're looking at the result? -- same problem on "Perform Basic Image Adjustment": changing, say, White Balance creates no "working" indicator or hourglass, but still takes several seconds before the display changes. How do you tell if a change has taken effect yet? -- manual says "when the list box for selecting an extender is displayed, select the extender attached at the time of shooting from the list box." I thought this info stored in the RAW file?? -- what IS color blur, photographically speaking? -- how does the diffraction correction actually work? I always thought that with tiny apertures, detail was lost forever. How, mathematically, is it recovered? -- developer suggestion: Highlight/Shadow warning should have an option to flash... -- developer suggestion: when loading an image, the Preview Window shows it in a blurry version, making me think the photo was blurry. There's no clear indication that it's still working. This working indicator really needs to be more than 12x12 pixels; it needs to be clear in the middle of the screen, such as at least 5% of the height and width. -- developer suggestion: "Tools-->Preview Window Display Settings" should be on the Preview menu, which is full of display settings. Also, changing the one option this subwindow is closing the Preview Window. When I re-open it (by double-clicking a thumbnail) the location is changed randomly and I have to re-move it. -- what is the point of the Tool Palette's downward-triangle button (upper right corner?) It just makes the palette empty, as far as I can see, but still takes up screen space.
