The risks of buying a "never used", decades old camera
steve m smith replied to vince_nl's topic in Nikon

Had to tell without seeing it.
I recently acquired a never been used before, stored in a loft since 1979, Mamiya Universal Press. The shutter in the 127mm lens works perfectly - something I was not expecting.
-
Return of Ektachrome!
steve m smith replied to wogears's topic in The Wet Darkroom: Film, Paper & Chemistry

Just be prepared for higher film and processing prices when Ektachrome arrives later this year

It still has to compete with Fujifilm, so I hope the prices will be similar.
-

Can't quite wrap my head around processing being included

In the UK, processing was always included for Kodachrome and there was a return envelope in the box.
About five years ago I was given some Kodachrome which expired in 1986. I used it and posted the film. Kodak processed it and sent me the slides which weren't too bad considering the age. Just a slight blue cast.

A photographer sues Getty Images for US$1B
steve m smith replied to Karim Ghantous's topic in Casual Photo Conversations

Does Getty have $1B to pay out?

I can't see this ever happening.
-
NDA unenforceable, want to protect business
steve m smith replied to stacy_c's topic in Wedding & Event

I forgot to say that down here (Australia) we are using a clause in the contract that says:
"We reserve the right to change our terms and conditions without notice".
Insert it towards the end of the Ts and Cs. Banks use this all the time, specially in loan documents.

But you can't change them after you have entered into a contract.
-

You don't need to be licensed or degree educated in the UK. You can call yourself professional if you are earning money.
The only issues you might have are validity of Visa to work and what you do about tax.

Night Photography: LED Street Lights
steve m smith replied to paul_fowler3's topic in Beginner Questions

The LED street lights are great. Not only are they white, they also do not put much light upwards like the old lights did.

We no longer have an orange glow over built up areas. This pleases both the astronomers and those who indulge in Milky Way photography.
-
Major Korean spam attack in the Business section!
steve m smith replied to dhbebb's topic in PhotoNet Site Help

I don't understand this typ of spam. There's nothing to click on and no advertisements. What's the point?
-

There are two sets of rails. The outer set is where the pressure plate comes to rest. This leaves a gap between the pressure plate and the inner set of rails which is just slightly bigger than the film thickness to allow the film to pass freely.

This gap is larger for 120 than 220 by the thickness of the backing paper.

To make a 220 back suitable for 120, shim the outer rails to leave a bit more gap for the film plus backing paper using pieces of tape.
Despite its name, the pressure plate should not put any pressure on the film.

What do you buy good film these days?
steve m smith replied to andrew_viny's topic in Leica and Rangefinders

Eastman Kodak sold its film business to another firm, which is still marketing those films under the Kodak trademark.

They only sold the rights to sell. Kodak still make the film.
-
Kodak Retina Reflex III
steve m smith replied to jason_withers's topic in Classic Manual Film Cameras

Does anyone else use one of the Retina Reflex series cameras?

One? No. I have three!
-
How can pushing work in really dark scenes?
steve m smith replied to joseph_michael1's topic in Black & White Practice

Many situations are hard to meter, and so darker than you think.

However - You don't want to meter it as if it was a normal 18% daylight scene which is what the meter will try to compensate for.

In most cases, you actually want it to look dark, so a stop or two less than the suggested exposure would be closer to correct.
-
Wedding payments...cancellations....second shooter
steve m smith replied to nanc1's topic in Wedding & Event

An expense clause and a cancellation refund clause based on reasonable ability to seek replacement work at various (usually three) dates. See a local lawyer to draft it up correctly.

Further to this, if money has been accepted to retain services for something which is susequently cancelled and the photographer has managed to get another booking for the same day, is he obliged to return the money for the original service which he is now no longer able to provide?
-
A book about Not Going Pro.
steve m smith replied to habsphoto's topic in Casual Photo Conversations

I think the same thing applies to most trades. People in them suggest other people do something else.
