  1. Shun, thanks as always. Mike, heavy lens + light wallet = no can do! 😄
  2. So my indecision with lenses continues.... I recently traded in (via KEH) my Nikon 200-500mm and my Nikon 70-300mm for the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR with the TC-14EIII. I immediately determined that I missed the zoom capability. Additionally, I sensed that the 300 was a little soft, which is contrary to all the reviews. Also not as snappy as I would have liked. Maybe it's the copy I purchased (listed as like new). I'm still in the window of being able to return it and intend to do so. I'm now looking at the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR (refurbished from Nikon) which I will couple with the TC 14III when I want the extra reach. My camera (D780) has the option of switching to DX sensor, so If I do the math right, this gets me to ~420 on the long end for BIF. Not as long as the 200-500, but I'm hoping that based on the reviews of this lens, that the images will be sharp enough. For background, I don't do the BIF too often but would like to be able to reach out when I want to. I considered the 80-400 but feel like that's a little too much to carry around weight wise. I mostly shoot landscapes and wildlife and birds in trees (not flying) when I can get close enough via a blind or by just being still long enough to let them get close. Any thoughts on this lens and TC combo? Also considered the TC-17ii but reviews are iffy.
  3. Thanks to all for your advice! It's much appreciated. My local camera shop pointed me in the direction of the Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD. All reviews I've read are generally positive, with the exception of some AF issues. Is anyone familiar with this lens?

  5. My current kit includes a D780, Nikon 70-300 AF-P, Nikon 200-500, and the Nikon 24-120. As I've aged a little, I've found the 200 - 500 to be too heavy to use without a tripod. I'm considering selling it, along with the 70-300 and picking up the AF-S 80-400 G. I've had this lens in the past when it was first issued but sold it to gain more reach with the 200-500. I don't do as much long distance wildlife photography as I used to, but I'd still like to have a little more reach than the 70-300 gives me on the rare occasion that I want it. So here's the question...is the 80-400 a good match with the D780? I know it's lighter than the 200-500 but I'd like to hear how people feel about using it handheld for extended periods. Also would like to hear opinions on AF, sharpness. s
  6. Regarding error messages - Photoshop Elements 15 says "Could not complete request - not right kind of document". NX Studio says "Failed to load images". I copied the files to my PC hard drive and tried to access from there as well as accessing directly from the external hard drive. Same error messages. I remain befuddled.
  7. Over the years, I have backed up my images to an external hard drive. While going through some reorganization, I found a file of RAW images, some of which would open, and some would not. These would have been all from Nikon digitial cameras. I attempted the Adobe Digital Negative converter with no success. Any suggestions?
  8. I have a Nikkor 16-80 DX which just hasn't been as sharp as I would like and I can't figure out if it's front or back focusing. I bought the camera and lens kit used from B&H. It might just be a bad copy. I was using this lens as my first attempt at fine tuning. I also have a 200-500 that's not tack sharp on the longer end. I was going to try that next. I use a Manfrotto tripod which is rock solid as my base. Thanks for your advice.
  9. Thanks Ben. I was using the AF fine tune tool in camera, but I was coming up with wildly different values when I repeated the process (twelve samples, throw out the high and the low, then average). I was using a target taped to the wall that I printed out from David Busch's instruction guide. I thought maybe there might be a more effective target to use or some advice on technique.
  10. Can anyone suggest a DIY process for calibrating lenses using the D500 AF Fine Tune function?
  11. I have a D750 and a D7200. I need some help in understanding the Image Area selection in the Photo Shooting menu. In the D750, my options are Choose Image Area (FX/1.2x/DX 1.5x). In the D7200, my options are DX and 1.3x. I took sample shots at 300mm (full frame 70-300 lens) at each selection and what I see are progressively closer images of my subject. Can I assume that the image from the D750 at 1.5x is the equivalent of 450mm? And for the D7200, can I assume that it is 1.3 times the already 1.5 crop factor (300 x 1.5 = 450. 450 x 1.3 = 585)? Thanks for any help provided.
  12. I am looking at buying a Nikon D500 and cannot locate a new one with a USA Warranty. B&H has a grey market copy available with their limited one year warranty and KEH has a used one rated excellent with their 180 day limited warranty. Does Grey Market mean I can't take it anywhere for repair other than the seller for ever? How would I know if the KEH copy is or isn't grey market? I'd like to be able to take it to my local camera shop for any issues that might arise after the warranty expires.
  13. Hello All, I've been using Photoshop Elements 15 with the NIK Collections plug-in. This combo has served me well as I really don't do too much post processing beyond the basics of exposure, sharpening, noise reduction, white balance, saturation, etc... Having said that, I've found that I just cannot get the results that I want when attempting sky replacements for blown out skies. PSE 15 does not include the "blend if" option (if it does, I cannot find it) and the Magic Wand tool doesn't capture all the pixels. I've seen some PS options out there that offer simpler methods for this, however, the user interfaces appear too complicated for my limited skill set (GIMP, for example). I really don't need the full PS or Lightroom setups for what I typically do. Any recommendations? Photoworks, Luminar 3 or 4?
  14. Looking for a wide angle for my D750 primarily for landscapes. I've seen positive reviews on both these lenses. The difference in MM is not so much an issue as is overall performance. I'm wondering if the Tamron is worth the additional $150.00. Any opinions out there? Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens for Nikon F Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens
  15. No, it does not have to be Tokina.
