Hello, I recently purchased a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super B w/50mm 2.8 Tessar along with the three supplementary Pro-Tessar lenses: 35mm f3.2, 85mm f3.2, and 115mm f4. All are in excellent cosmetic condition but as is known with these cameras, the controls are all sluggish and in need of a CLA. The Pro-Tessars could use some lubrication on the rotating lookup scale on the lens barrel. I've scoured the internet searching for sources to send the camera to but cannot find anyone on my own. Can someone recommend someone who might be able to work on these? I have read that the Super B is a "B" to work on http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif and a lot of folks won't touch it. Thanks for you help! __________________

Is this a Leica IIIf or a Leica IIIc?
ray_dicecca replied to rui_ferreira1's topic in Leica and Rangefinders

Your copy seems to be more indicative of a IIIf. Notice that the top cover screws are missing on your copy versus this IIIc.

When I purchased my IIIf's, I preferred to buy copies minus the top cover retaining screws not only for aesthetic reasons but moreso, to purchase a later serial number version which seems to do away with the exposed screw style top cover.

I recall seeing black-dial IIIf's (and some early red-dials) with this style of top cover (with the screws). Later versions did away with them but I am not sure when. Perhaps they were phased out until old stock was used up?
-

I am fortunate that I live close enough to Youxin to drive to his home and wait while he works on my gear. Most recently, Youxin cleaned a Collapsible Summicron for me. He did an excellent job.

A little late to this thread but for others contemplating an M6 purchase with this condition:

I am the original owner of a black 1985 Wetzlar (Leitz Red Dot) M6 and also have a little bubbling as you describe - not so much on top as you have shown in your photo, but around the rear edges of the top-plate (where it meets the body) and around the film-plate door. Otherwise, the camera looks cosmetically perfect and operates fine.

Good news is that it hasn't spread since the initial bubbling and appears to be localized to those areas. I've never seen that on the silver versions however.

5cm Collapsible Summicron w/Kodak Ektar 100
ray_dicecca replied to ray_dicecca's topic in Leica and Rangefinders

Thank you for the kind feedback. I re-checked the file size in IrfanView and they are indeed the medium size scans I ordered (18MB; 3089 x 2024) so apologies to Richard Photo Lab. The Windows directory file size were around 1.5MB so I was thrown by that.

These were re-sized and some were cropped. I applied some light post-processing to increase contrast. The recesses lighting and lack of hood may have contributed to the decreased contrast.

This is a later model coated Summicron. I am pleased with the OOF areas (Bokeh) unlike my Summitar which renders it rather "swirly". Both great picture takers however.
-

These birthday party remembrance snapshots from a week ago are from a recently CLA'd Leica IIIf and 5cm Collapsible Summicron. Youxin did a nice job cleaning camera and lens. Watching an LTM lens being taken apart and cleaned is not for the faint of heart :)

Film was Kodak Ektar 100 scanned on a Noritsu by Richard Photo Lab. These were lo-res scans. I think this may have been an error as I ordered medium-resolution scans and will contact them to resolve - their communication and service is cordial and fast however! I did not use the barndoor hood so even though this is Ektar, I had to bump up the contrast a bit.

I took an incident light meter reading with a Gossen Luna-Pro SBC and used that reading throughout this short shoot. I shot really quick at f/2.8 using 1/25 (framing with a SBOOI while using the attached Leicavit to advance) and completed the roll in about 5-10 minutes. I had a bit of a problem seeing the rangefinder at times when focusing but overall, pleased with the results.

I hope you enjoy them and sorry for the cheesy, faux-frames.

A review of YYeCamera Repair (Youxin Ye) A true master!
ray_dicecca replied to steven_burch's topic in Leica and Rangefinders

Nothing but great things to say about Youxin! I have used him several times for my various Leicas.

This past Fall, I went to his home and spent the afternoon watching him work on my recently purchased IIIf RDST w/Leicavit and 50 Collapsible Summicron. The IIIf's self-timer needed some adjustment to trip the shutter; the Leicavit needed some light lubrication; and the Summicron was hazy and needed to be disassembled and cleaned along with the aperture blades (couldn't believe how dirty they were).

All in all, a great job by Youxin; the price was very reasonable, and a nice afternoon spent with an excellent repairman.
-

Although not exactly pocketable and a bit weighty, I picked one up for $15 at a local antiques co-op and am thrilled at its performance. The 50mm Cintar lens is actually quite good. Good luck with your choice. How good (or bad) WAS the Argus C-3 lens?
ray_dicecca replied to Troll's topic in Classic Manual Film Cameras

The 50mm f3.5 coated Cintar was a very capable performer on the C3.

Here with Kodak Portra 400 (handheld 1/30 @f4.5):
