1. I have the 2x II and the 1.4x III. I hate them both. The loss of IQ with my 100-400L II is very noticeable. I much prefer to crop images from my 5D IV and 5DS R.
 2. For me the answer is no. I have too much invested and I am happy with my current DSLRs, a 5DS R and 5D IV. I am happy that I came back from a mirrorless APS-C system. Now, if a 5DS R II were to be announced...
 3. I didn't do the trade-in route but bought an SL. I have lots of Leica M glass and I am very happy with the SL and the M lenses work very well with it.
 4. All taken with EOS 5DS R + EF 100-400 L II
 5.
That would be the optimum solution. I just removed the 1x (placeholder) filter from the lens and I'm looking at it now. The glass will rotate in the holder but it doesn't unscrew. Are the Canon additional filters different from the placeholder filter?

 6.
Ah, thanks for the heads-up. I'll investigate the clamp-on frames.

 7.
I need a circular polarizing filter for my 300mm L lens. The 34mm drop-in filters are like hens' teeth so I was wondering if it is possible to fit one on the front of the lens. I read that the front diameter is 78.5mm so non-standard but I have found a machine shop that can make me a step-down to 77mm. Is this a feasible option? Has anyone tried it?
