1. @digitaldog Thank you. It’s great to hear advice from “someone doing both Adobe support and Adobe beta testing.”
 2. Thanks to all for the input. @paddler4 The issue with the latest Photoshop and Lightroom is the requirement for a modern GPU, which I believe is needed for the latest and greatest AI imaging tasks. A hot processor paired with gobs of RAM is no longer adequate.
 3. It’s time to upgrade my computer (a PC) to be able to run the latest version of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. I am considering an Apple Mac Studio with M2 Max. Alternatively, I can go with a custom build PC, including an Intel Core i9-14900KF Processor, 32GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti - 12GB video card. The cost difference is not much. My current display is suitable for photo editing, so I will not need to upgrade at this time. The buzz is that the Mac Studio with M2 is blazingly fast in all photo editing aspects, while there are no accounts of the PC speed, which I presume would be no slouch as configured. Should I take the plunge into Apple, or stick with PC. The purported ease of Apple sounds inviting, but I like the option of being able to open the case and make upgrades myself. What would you recommend and why. Thank you.
 4. Hector, thanks for your views. NVidia isn’t forthcoming in some of their spec sheets whether cards are 10 bit color or not. Their Quadro 5000 spec sheet makes no mention. I’ll look around. Can someone tell me if Windows 7 64 support 10 bit color?
 5. Thank you all for posting. I appreciate that people at photo.net are generally civil, unlike that other big site. I got the idea to buy a GeForce GTX 1060 SC from the recommendation pages over at Puget systems (for their photoshop editing builds) and figured that the 3G option would suffice, and would cut costs. However, I may go for the 6G option. It sounds like this choice is probably OK for my needs. If the graphics card is able to crank things up to speedify my photo editing through leveraging their GPU, all the better. A larger SSD is indeed on my radar, but currently I squeak by, as long as I don’t load up too much more programs. Adobe does provide some guidance on selecting GPU’s on this page in case anyone is interested: Photoshop graphics processor (GPU) card FAQ Adobe’s recommendation tend to be high end from what I could see. Regards,
 6. I’m looking to get a graphics card to use the capabilities of my BenQ SW2700PT monitor. A Spyder5pro will be used for monitor calibration. My sole interest is photo editing (Photoshop) in a color managed workflow. Currently I’m running an Intel Core I7-477K processor and the motherboard has PCI expansion slots available: PCIe 3.0/2.0 x 16. Any recommendations on a graphics card? Would this graphics card be overkill: EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING 3GB? Is there a better option in a graphics card? Thanks.
 7. There is app from Michael Tapes Design called Instant JPEGS From Raw. It's free and can be found here: http://michaeltapesdesign.com/instant-jpeg-from-raw.html It extracts a tiny thumbnail sized file from CR2 files in a flash and puts them in a folder alongside the CR2 files for quick viewing. I have it on my PC. You might want to give it a trys
 8.
Thank you all for responding with suggestions.
In the olden days of slide film, I did use the 100mm macro + 2x teleconverter + extension tube. That set-up worked well optically and had 2.75X magnification and useable working distance. Unfortunately that rig did not work well for me with a DSLR. Anyway, I went to B&H yesterday and picked up a Vello Macrofier Reverse Mount Adapter and am reversing the 100mm macro + teleconverter + extension tube. Lighting is with a flash on my home made macro flash bracket. Initial tests look promising, but with a 580 EX flash the rig is woefully heavy.
Ironically the local health dept. is spraying for mosquitos on account of west nile virus and zika virus, and the result is that there are very, very few insects in my neck of the woods. Parklands in my neighborhood that once abounded in predatory flies, beetles, tree hoppers, green bees, damselflies, dragonflies, etc. are pretty barren of such insect life. Supposedly the spraying is based on bacterial agents that only affect mosquitos, but based on what I see, there is something hapening affecting all insect life.
If I can find some insects and get my act together with this reverse mount adapter I’ll post some pics.
Thanks again.

 9.
Macro coupler adaptors are available to reverse mount one lens on the front of another via the filter threads. The reversed lens functions as auxiliary lens. The problem is that not all combinations work, which I guess is why I asked about the image quality of this particular combination. I propose to buy that Pentax 50mm because it has a good reputation and is cheap. I am open to any other lens to reverse mount. Another issue is the working distance, which can be too short for insect pics and would spook them.

 10.
I’m looking to do some close-up work of insects by using my EF 100mm f/2.8 macro coupled with a reversed Pentax SMCP-M 50mm f2 to achieve 2X magnification. I plan to buy a used Pentax SMCP-M 50mm f2, which are pretty cheap. Lighting will be with an off-camera speedlite on a homemade flash bracket on a full frame camera. Has anyone used such a Pentax lens (or any other brand) this way, and what was your impression of image quality? What was the approximate working distance (i.e. distance from front of lens to subject).

Thanks,

 11.
Problem solved!
Go to the Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Personalization. On this screen go to “Display” and select “Smaller 100% (default)." DPP(4) now opens without error messages. No need for new video card.

 12.
The latest drivers for the graphics card were downloaded and allow for setting various custom resolution. However, the demands of 2560x1600 resolution appear to be too much for the card. I got an error message about throughput or insufficient data pipeline. I think I need to buy a more robust graphics card.

 13.
The graphics card is a Intel® HD Graphics 4600 integral with the Core i7 processor. The 2560x1600 resolution is not an option thru the Intel graphics control pane. The driver were updated via the device manager. Still get the error message. Rats!
Appreciate your input.

 14.
I tried all resolutions available thru Intel graphics control pane display, namely:
1280x768
1280x720
1040x768
800x400

 15.
Current resolution is 1280x800. But as noted changing the resolution does not help.
