Does anyone have a recommendation (or two?) for a monitor costing under $500? My budget is flexible, but not drastically.

I work on a 13" MacBook Pro with a retina display and would like to be able to hook it up to something larger for processing photographs and also for typesetting (QuarkXpress; InDesign). If it can rotate to vertical, that would be a real plus.

(In case this information matters: I don't currently have any calibration hardware/software but will in the future, and I am in the US.)

Some years ago, I purchased a SanDisk card--can't now recall if it was a CF or SD--that I suspected was a counterfeit because it looked just a little different from others of the same model already on hand. It had come from a secondary seller on Amazon. I called SanDisk, who referred me to an e-mail address. They were able to determine from the image of the card and, I think, a serial number (maybe on the packaging?), that it was, indeed, a counterfeit. I left appropriate feedback for the seller and returned the card; Amazon issued a refund. Since then, I have purchased cards only from B&H.

I suggest you contact Lexar. Perhaps they can tell you.

Image File Naming Systems - what works for you?
noreen replied to DavidTriplett's topic in Casual Photo Conversations

I begin each of mine with _ND, followed by YYMMDD and then a sequential four-digit number for each day, starting with 0001. They are kept in folders labeled by date and location. When I process a raw file, the resulting TIF gets a more distinctive name, usually ending with the date I processed it (e.g., _ND151207-0026-Ruby_crowned_Kinglet-w_UNIDENTIFIED_insect_prey-20151215b). It's clunky but has served me well enough so far. If I need to share the photo, I sometimes change the name, but in some way that I can always match it back to the original.

I keyword each raw file, so the ones I haven't processed don't need descriptive names.

(I don't use Lightroom... yet. Not sure how my system will change if/when I do.)
-

My experience with the 80-400mm is different from Brad Hill's. I find it to be quite sharp at 400mm (in my judgment, anyway). With a 400mm f/2.8 being out of reach, it remains my standard of sharpness as I consider something longer, in the event that I should need that. I'm following this conversation with interest and thank everyone for posting their experience.

(Nikon D7100, ISO 400, 80-400mm @400mm, f/7.1, 1/1000 sec)

Man made objects in nature photography
noreen replied to Didier Lamy's topic in Casual Photo Conversations

"Nature" can indeed mean many things, but the field of photography called "nature photography" refers to only this definition (from the Oxford English Dictionary):

11.

a. The phenomena of the physical world collectively; esp. plants, animals, and other features and products of the earth itself, as opposed to humans and human creations.

-

Southern Arizona. :)

I notice that the elves removed your previous thread about this and wonder if this one too will vanish.

WEEKLY DISCUSSION 2.0 #1 - Bill Brandt
noreen replied to Norma Desmond's topic in Casual Photo Conversations

I like his work very much. Much of it presents a Daliesque quality that I admire: most of the nudes but also some (many?) of the landscape (e.g., "Early Evening, Kew Gardens") and documentary (e.g., "Tic Tac Men at Ascot Races") photography as well. "Early Morning on the River" is haunting and somehow--to me--evokes one of Kipling's sea stories.
-

All of the Deep Woods Off! products (which I usually use and find quite effective even against Maine's notorious mosquitoes) are 25% DEET:

http://www.off.com/en-us/products/pages/off-deep-woods.aspx#off-deep-woods-insect-repellent-v
