  1. The Monalog Collective Monalogfest Photographer’s Outing and Print Sharing, Learning Experience is a chance for black and white analog photographers to meet, make photographs, show their images and communicate what their work is about, gain insights from other like-minded photographers, and participate in demonstrations of silver gelatin, platinum/palladium and carbon transfer printing techniques by Monalog members and noted fine art photographer and printing practitioners Jim Fitzgerald, David Haas and Gary Samson. But most of all, the goal is to have a great time with other like-minded photographers! It is also an opportunity for black and white analog photographers that are not members of Monalog to interact with and learn more about the Monalog Collective. Monalogfest is limited to 25 participants and will be based in historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, nearby, the cities of Allentown, Nazerath and Easton, the Pocono Mountains, the beautiful countryside of Bucks County and its picturesque towns, as well as the Delaware River and its many small towns. This means that there is an abundance of diverse subject matter to satisfy every photographer. It is easily accessible from Philadelphia, New York City, Allentown, Lehigh Valley and Newark airports. There are a number of local hotels and bed and breakfasts, along with plenty of restaurants in the area. NOTE: We have reserved a block of rooms at a special rate with a complementary deluxe continental breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, Bethlehem, PA. We will begin our event with a welcome and group “get to know you” diner at a local restaurant (TBD) on Thursday evening in Bethlehem. Friday will be devoted to making photographs in the field and having the opportunity to meet with and learn from Monalog member David Haas at his historic Allentown row house dedicated to the production of fine art black and white silver photographs. We will all meet at 8:30am at a central location and then take it from there. No pressure and no expectations. The idea is to be with other photographers, learn from an expert, have fun and be mutually supportive. For those that want to make images, we will have a number of locations scouted out where participants can meet up, or you can go your own way freestyle, as there is no shortage of subject matter to be photographed. Additionally, the following printing demonstrations and talks will be available on Friday: Carbon Transfer Printing with Jim Fitzgerald, at David Haas darkroom and studio in nearby Allentown 10:00 – 1pm (up to 8 participants – pre-registration required) Platinum/Palladium Printing with Gary Samson, at David Haas darkroom and studio in nearby Allentown 2:00pm – 5:00pm (up to 8 participants – pre-registration required) On Friday evening at 7pm we will meet at the hotel conference room to begin to share work and learn from one and other. The first group of photographers will be given 30 minutes to present his/her work. Here is how it will work: Presenting participants can display 10 prints representative of their work, The presenter would give a statement about his/her work, vision, focus, etc., discuss their displayed images and what they hope to gain from this experience The presenter and other participants would then enter into an interactive discussion about the work. Total Time 30 minutes On Saturday we will meet again at 8:30am and then head out for more photographing or have the option to meet with David Haas. Silver Printing with David Haas, at David’s darkroom and studio in nearby Allentown 9:00am – 12:00am (up to 8 participants – pre-registration required) At 1pm we will reconvene at the hotel conference room to continue sharing work and learning from one and other. We will break for dinner and reconvene at 7pm for more participant presentations and discussion. On Sunday we will meet at the hotel conference room for our final presentation session at 8:30am. Included will be time for participant feedback, thoughts on possible next steps, upcoming events and how to get involved with Monalog. We will adjourn at 1pm. Come join us and be part of this exciting Monalog event! There is a low cost of $50 to attend, so you will want to sign up early to ensure participation in this exciting event. We look forward to seeing you in August! For more information contact Michael Marks at: info@monalogcollective.com or 215-348-9171
  2. I am pleased to announce that the second stop of the Monalog Collective’s traveling roadshow is at the Gallery 270 in Westwood, New Jersey. The show is called The 21st Century Handmade Print: The Monalog Collective – another great title, given what Monalog is all about! The 270 is truly a unique gallery, and Director Tom Gramegna has a real passion for photography that’s infectious! Here’s a description of the 270’s mission. I think you will see why I am so excited about this show! “Gallery 270, founded in 1998 in Westwood, NJ, flourishes just 20 miles from the nexus of the fine art photographic marketplace. While over a hundred galleries actively sell photography in NYC, Gallery 270 succeeds by catering to experienced and novice collectors seeking an increasingly rare quality in the field – value. The gallery exists to serve its’ varied community while fostering an appreciation for, and the desire to own, the work of the distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is so much more intimately engaged. I hope you will join me on October 15th at 6pm for the show’s virtual Opening … more information to follow! There will also be an in person Opening on November 11th and virtual events to be announced … again more information to follow. The gallery is located within Bergan County Camera on 270 Westwood Avenue, Westwood, NJ and is open Monday through Saturday, 10am – 5pm. For more immediate information the gallery can be reached at info@gallery270.com or by phone at (201) 358-5076. Stay safe, Michael
  3. I am pleased and excited to announce that the Monalog Collective I founded with five other fine photographers less than two years ago is having its first group show! I would have never dreamt that in this short amount of time we would have grown to thirteen members … twelve photographers and a terrific photo historian! The show is called Expression Through Tradition: The Monalog Collective, and I could not think of a better title given what Monalog is all about … black and white film photography and traditional printing processes. I also could not be happier about where we are having our show and with whom. The Stirner Modern Gallery is a beautiful space and the owner; Jonas Stirner is a terrific artist and a wonderful host! I could not ask for more! I hope you will join me on September 3rd at from 6:00 – 8:00pm for the show’s Opening. Also, on September 17that 7:00pm there will be a talk by our photo historian Chris Karfakis, and there will be a gallery walk through on Sunday from 12:00 – 5:00pm. The gallery will also be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 -6:00pm; Fridays from 12:00 – 8:00pm; Saturdays from 10:00am – 8:00pm and Sundays from 12:00 – 5:00pm. Stirner Modern Gallery Presents EXPRESSION THROUGH TRADITION An Exhibition of Photographs By THE MONALOG COLLECTIVE The Monalog Collective is a group of like-minded photographers that formed to promote Black and White photography and the industry that supports it. This exhibition of photographs, made by twelve Monalog Collective Members, includes modern and historic applications of traditional emulsion-based processes. All images are original and hand-made by the artist. Each photographer has selected a specific process that best captures and expresses their vision of and feelings for a desired subject that is then revealed and shared via a tintype, ambrotype or print. Stay well, Michael

  6. A group of black and white analog photographers has just launched a new photographic collective dedicated to supporting black and white film photography and traditional printing processes. They have chosen to call it Monalog™, a new word derived from “monochrome” and “analog” because they don’t make color prints or incorporate anything digital in what they do … no scanning of negatives, no creation of “negatives” from digital files, and no digital printing of film negatives. Monalog’s founders make silver gelatin enlargements, contact prints on Lodima and Azo paper, platimum and albumen prints and prints using carbon transfer processes. They use 35mm and medium format rangefinders, medium format SLRs, and a range of wooden view cameras that produce images using 4x5, 8x10, 11x14, 8x20 or 14x17 inch negatives. While they use different tools, films, chemistry and papers to create their art, all share a love and unabiding commitment to black and white film and traditional printing processes. Monalog’s goal is to grow through membership of fellow “monalog” photographers that are dedicated to this wonderful medium and exhibit a high caliber of vision and adherence to their craft. The collective will also engage with others, individually and through collaborative activity, and support the industry that makes all this possible. So please check out the Monalog Collective at www.monalogcollective.com. There you will find member galleries and information, an entertaining and informative blog and updates on news and events. Monalog welcomes a limited number of other like-minded photographers that wish to join the collective. For more information, please contact info@monalogcollective.com.
  7. Time to get together again to discuss our photographs with the ever-expanding group! Yes, how about joining us and getting together to chat about our photographs and the stories behind them. What was your intent in making the photograph, what were you trying to say, was it a success? If you made your print, were there any particular challenges involved? This is not a discussion focused on gear — the idea is to share insights, get constructive feedback, learn a few things, relax and make new friends! Well, if this sounds interesting and fun, how about joining me in beautiful downtown Doylestown, PA, in the heart of scenic Bucks County, and we will get together over a cup of coffee. Photographers of all levels are welcome. Bring only a couple of prints to discuss. Obviously the prints should be Black and White and should be film based! The get together will be on Sunday, August 27th, 10:00-11:30am at the Zen Den coffee shop, located on ‪20 Donaldson Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Email or call me at 215-348-9171 if you are interested. First come first serve! I look forward to meeting you!
  8. I am very pleased to announce that I have a one-person exhibit showing during July at the Red Filter Galley entitled Jerusalem and Aida: Close Yet Far Apart. For many years the Gallery resided in a physical space in Lambertville, NJ. Now it resides “virtually” on the Internet. What is exciting to me is the Gallery’s “focus on monochrome images, Black and White, allowing new examination of abstraction, tonalities, textures and light.” I am therefore very proud and excited to also be included as a Gallery artist. These photographs mean a lot to me and I often think about making them and the circumstances under which they were made. Jerusalem and the Aida Refugee Camp though close in proximity, present a stark contrast. During several visits to Israel and the West Bank I endeavored to capture some of the differences in these two places, as well as the ironies that are seen in daily life. I hope you can take a moment to check out my exhibit at Red Filter Gallery and while you are there take a look at the work of the other fine photographers featured by the Gallery.

  10. By popular demand we are going to take another break from doing our periodic Photo Chat Get-Togethers and instead get together for another Photo Walk Meet Up! Yes, how about getting together to make some photographs at the historic remains of the Lock Ridge Furnace complex located in Alburtis, PA. This is the site of one of the few remaining coke fired iron furnaces built in the 19th century. There is plenty to photograph with fantastic old architectural structures residing in a beautiful park in scenic Lehigh Valley. Well, if this sounds interesting and fun, how about joining me on Sunday, March 19th, at 10am. We will meet at the Lock Ridge Park and Furnace Museum located at 525 Franklin St., Alburtis, PA 18011. Photographers of all levels are welcome. Email at info@michaelmarksphoto.com or call me at 215-348-9171 if you are interested. I look forward to meeting you!
  11. I will be having a one-person show at the Zen Den Coffee House, right here in beautiful Doylestown. Yes, it’s the same place we hold our periodic Photo Chat’s Get Togethers at! The Zen Den is not only a neat place to sip coffee and eat food, but it goes out of its way to showcase regional painters and photographers … like me. The exhibit will be on display from Wednesday, March 1st through Friday, March 31st and will be a reprise of last summer’s show I had in Staunton Virginia that focused on some of my favorite photographs of people. So if you find yourself in Bucks County and have a spare moment, please stop by, have a cup of coffee and take a look at my photographs. Send me a note and maybe we can get together to discuss photography over something hot! The Zen Den is located 20 Donaldson Street, Doylestown, PA 18901.
  12. <p>I am very saddened by this news. I never met Tom but bought many of this Softies over the years. Both he and Tuulikki were always helpful and generous with their time, be it on the phone or through email responses. A true gentleman for sure. While I never met him, I am certainly better off for the experiences I had. While he produced great products, my guess is that he touched people in ways more profound and enduring. </p>

  14. <p>Hello,<br /><br />There is a change in my workshop schedule. Please see below.<br> <strong>Living a Photographic Life – Balancing the Day to Day with Personal Enrichment, with</strong><strong> Michael Marks</strong> <em>Chimayo Gallery, Thursdays January 26-March 16, 7:00-9:00 p.m.</em><br> Michael</p>
  15. I am pleased to announce my photography workshops for 2017. I am also offering customized workshops designed to meet specific goals of individuals. Please contact me to discuss or with any questions you may have. Best holiday wishes to all. Michael <strong> </strong> <strong>2017 Workshop Schedule<br /></strong> <strong> </strong> <strong> </strong> <strong>Living a Photographic Life – Balancing the Day to Day with Personal Enrichment, with</strong><strong> Michael Marks</strong> <em>Chimayo Gallery, Wednesdays January 25-March 15, 7:00-9:00 p.m.</em> Together with the Chimayo Gallery, located in Perkasie, PA, I am adopting my popular class taught at Delaware Valley University’s Center for Learning In Retirement to make it available to a wider audience. This series of classes will provide a fun and learning experience in a friendly and supportive environment for photographers of all skill levels. Learn how to make photography important, fun and rewarding so it will become an integral part of your life despite all the other activities and responsibilities you have. “Keeping your head in the game”. That idea relates to the joy of living a photographic life. The question is how to do this! Let’s face it; most of us have non-photographic jobs, family obligations, etc. So short of making photography your livelihood, what can you do? Obviously you will want to go out into the world and make photographs. Trouble is that most don’t have the time or ability to do that on a regular and continuous basis. So our avocation can’t be our vocation. Time to move onto Plan B, which for most of us is the real world. But living in the real world doesn’t mean we cannot live a photographic life. That is a major part of what this course is about, as well as to help you make better pictures that you will be proud of and want to actually have displayed. Yes displayed! The reason we are going to do this is that in today’s world many rarely hold a meaningful photograph in their hands let alone see one on their walls! Rather most store them on their iPhone, iPad or computer, or perhaps upload them to photo sites like Flickr on the Internet. You will produce a portfolio project containing 10 printed photographs on a theme of your choice along with a written essay describing why you chose it, what it means to you, and what was learned during the course of making the photos and arranging your portfolio. In addition to the theme/portfolio, students will be making photographs every week to bring in for discussion and friendly critique. The purpose of this to get a better idea of composition and light, as well the importance of meeting the objective you had in mind when you decided to make the photograph in the first place. Doing this every week will help you as you are thinking about making good photographs and building your final portfolio. By the end of the course students will have learned about or discovered a range of activities that will enable them to always keep their heads in the game and will have created a strong portfolio to be proud of, containing photographs that deserve to be hung on the wall! <strong><em>Fee: $170</em></strong> Please contact Chimayo Gallery by phone or email to reserve a spot. 267-733-5012 <a href="mailto:chimayoperkasie@gmail.com">chimayoperkasie@gmail.com</a> <strong>Black and White Fine Print Boot Camp, with Michael Marks</strong> <em>March 3 - 7</em> <em>May 5 – 7</em> <em>July 14 – 16</em> <em>September 8 -10</em> <em>November 3 - 5</em> I am excited to offer the <em>Black and White Fine Print Boot Camp Workshop</em>, a fun but intense weekend of activity designed to quickly and efficiently provide participants with the knowledge and tools necessary jump into the world of black and white analog photography. The workshop will provide a unique experience in a friendly and supportive environment for photographers of all skill levels who wish to make satisfying images using black and white film, traditionally printed on silver gelatin paper to the highest archival standards. Participants will experience making black and white film photographs with their camera of choice, and see how beautiful hand crafted silver gelatin prints from film negatives can be made. The workshop will benefit beginners as well as advanced students looking for a refresher to improve their existing skills. I know that there is a lot of mystery and disinformation about traditional darkroom processes and equipment requirements and the difficulty in producing gorgeous black and white prints. The secret is that it really is not difficult at all and equipment requirements are not onerous. This workshop is designed to quickly make you familiar with a range of film cameras, proper exposure technique, film development and how to use composition to create compelling images. This will be accomplished through lectures, and field experience with one-on-one guidance by myself in my darkroom and at several locations in and around the charming town of Doylestown Pennsylvania. In order to maximize one on one and group interaction, the workshop is limited to five participants. Good technique is important and its application essential in producing something of beauty, but photography is more than just technique. Much more goes into making an emotionally moving photograph as originally envisioned in the mind’s eye. Reviews and constructive evaluation of participants’ portfolio of prints, participant description of original concept, objective, approach taken, and equipment, materials and methods used, along with reaction from other participants concerning alternative approaches or possible changes in emphasis will go a long way towards illuminating and strengthening emotional considerations beyond technical controls. I will also demonstrate how to easily create handcrafted black and white prints with a minimum of difficulty -- and no mystery. We will start by looking at proof sheets. Then we will select one of my negatives to print, determine proper printing exposure and paper contrast. We will establish and follow repeatable steps to arrive at the final “fine print” as quickly and easily as possible, including application of burning and dodging procedures and use of selenium toner for subtle tonal shift and archival permanence in the final product. Workshop participants will be able to work with the same negative to obtain the same results. Finally, I will also demonstrate how to spot, mount and mat the finished print. The result is that participants will be able to leave with the confidence to be able to make, print and display meaningful personal images back at home. Attendees can bring up to ten prints for instructor review. Be prepared to learn a lot, work hard and have fun! <strong><em>Fee: $395</em></strong> Please contact me by phone or email to reserve a spot. 215-348-9171 <a href="mailto:info@michaelmarksphoto.com">info@michaelmarksphoto.com</a> <strong>Personal Workshops</strong> I also will be offering customized workshops designed to meet specific goals of individuals or as many as five photographers per workshop here in Doylestown, PA or at your location. Workshops can be 1 to 3 days in length. Working together, we can custom design a workshop to meet your specific needs. Select the time of year, workshop location and duration, as well as workshop design, to include photographing at place(s) of your choice and darkroom instruction with hands on printing by you. <strong><em>Fee: $325 per day for an individual in Doylestown, PA (group discounts available based on number of participants). Out of town workshops add associated travel costs. </em></strong> Please contact me by phone or email to discuss what you would like to accomplish. 215-348-9171 <a href="mailto:info@michaelmarksphoto.com">info@michaelmarksphoto.com</a>
