1. Yeah, that righty-tighty habit is a tuffy. My one generation older Gitzo GT55 series supports a Sachtler head and a big Sigma zoom. The collar locks require very little force and the weight of the head is enough to collapse the legs unless their dirty. My brief time with Sachtler's 100mm Flowtech quickness and ease of terrain setup was stunningly sensible. Good luck with your search.
2. Thanks, it seems I'm way out of my element for a simple snapshot. Oh well.
3. Can you suggest any ballpark settings for shooting Saturn using a D4?
4. Fun thread Sandy. Matt Butler you've got it goin' on! That's one hip clamp and one amazing town. +1 Mike R. My already heavy kit has become heavier with occasional video. Its also the best place to hang my back pack that carries my folding stool and sunscreen.
5. As a hack sports photo hobbyist who went from a D300 to D4 I wouldn't even begin emulate in empirical terms of the virtues of the D4. I simply needed a faster frame rate which has now led to the luxury learning to control the burst duration and the amount of associated deletions. I'm so not complaining. Maybe someone can explain this. With the CF card the system seemed to hunt during autofocus and/or buffering. Even though I was missing far less shots compared to the D300 it was still a bit frustrating. Since the XQD card, nothing. My only issue seems to have been addressed in the D5. Making the Fine Autofocus adjustment for my assortment of long lenses is a pain. Forgetting to change the menu setting for the corresponding lens goes to my unworthiness of the overall quality the D4 provides me. Which ever you decide on it should put a smile on your face. You should let everyone know. Have fun with it.
6. Ed, I haven't been to the RRS site in a while. I find this shot of your FH-350 actually mounted more informative than their previous website images. Was the RRS tripod base too small for this bowl and ball combination? It's a handsomely tactile looking head, very nice indeed. Did you forget the cost within the first few minutes of that high tolerance silky smoothness? I know I did and I ain't looking back. Here's a quick iPhone image of my rig in Santa Cruz Monday afternoon 3/11. Nikon D4, neoprene covered Sigma 300-800mm f5.6, RRS Long Lens support, Sachtler FSB 10T, Gitzo 5541LS, NatureScape safety plate.
7. Interesting stuff. Thanks for the info.
8. Hello Ed, I have a Really Right Stuff Long Lens Support and their B2-Pro Knob Clamp on a monopod, really great quality stuff which is why I considered the RRS FH 350 at the outset. Unfortunately, I needed to audition this new to me piece of kit and was unable to in my area. On paper the FH 350s load capacity is upwards of 50lbs. but its counter balance is rated at 10lbs. I'm humping over 18lbs without video. My Son is an Engineer at Comcast Sports and all you see there is big Vinten gear. My nearby Vinten / Sachtler servicing dealer had both the Vinten Blue 5 and the Sachtler FSB 10 to demo. They both worked well but the Sachtler top loading Touch and Go snap in mount instantly won me over compared to Vinten's dovetail plate slide in rear entry, balancing, and clamping down. The overall confident stability of the Sachtler Touch and Go when loading and unloading this heavy payload is simply more sensible, quick, and safe. The Sachtler FSB 10 has a 26lb. counterbalance rating. The RRS Long Lens Support offers location flexibility for the small Touch and Go proprietary mounting plate plus three inches of lateral adjustment on the head so I'm always right in the pipe 5X5 with no bounce back. The Sachtler uses a flat surfaced ball mount to be used on a plate or in a cup. I need the Gitzo's flat plates underside hook to weight down the tripod more than the quick leveling of the ball. I must admit I've become a Sachtler fan boy. I just noticed the RRS FH 350 fluid head is missing from their site menu but is displaying mounting clamps in their Cinema section. B&H shows them back ordered. Redesigning?
9. Last year I replaced a Jobu Pro Gimbal with a Sachtler FSB10T to support my goofy heavy Sigma 300-800 f5.6. The Sachtler ball is mounted on the Gitzo 55 series' flat plate. I'm getting many more in focus images using my same hack technique. I didn't think the T mount would be practical but it offers all the weight shifting latitude I require. The in-and-out is fabulous and the lock out during mobility is absolute. Except for the $80 proprietary mounting plates I have no remorse whatsoever.
10. Turned HDR off, BINGO! Thank your all for your time.
11. D4 body Firmware Ver.1.02. I really am going Magoo!
12. I can't find the step by step directions for changing the Image Quality from JPEG to RAW which is now greyed out. Feel like Mr. Magoo
13.
Anybody have a link to step by step instructions to safely move an iPhoto library?
I've read some horror stories regarding moving an iPhoto library from to an outboard and/or backup drive. The library is currently residing on a 2011 Mac Mini 5,2 10.7.5. My main concern is not to lose the original image and if I can retain any modifications of original images that would be great but of less concern. Thanks.
