1.
Good advice, Charles; thanks. My printer is an Epson 3800 which can print 1440 x 720 dpi. What's the relationship between scanner resolution and printer resolution?

 2.
Seems like you're all pretty much in agreement on "scanning flat," and I think I will follow suit. Actually, it's one less set of variables in the workflow, and that makes sense.
Some of the stuff I've read (you can tell I'm a newbie to digital, though a 45-year veteran of analog) suggests that you not scan at any higher resolution than what you actually need. Alan mentions that he scans at 2400 dpi. I have shot in all formats over the years--35mm transparencies, various medium formats, and 4x5. Is there a one-size-fits-all scanning resolution?

 3.
When scanning B&W or color negs and transparencies on my Epson -700, is it better to zero all the scanner settings and make any adjustments in Lightroom or Photoshop, or should I be using sharpening, etc. during the scan?
