I'm buying my first camera and lens combo - I want to be able to quantify if the lens is good or not. Conrad - you seem to think it's not quantifiable and I just need to relate to word of mouth?

I know I want a wide lens, for photos not video - now what do I look for when shopping online to tell which is better quality? Thanks :)

This tool is great in the link here but unfortunately it doesn't have any of landscapes - does anyone know of something similar online?
