1.
Thanks Gus. I didn't realise you were on RFF as well.

 2.
Update: trying to approach this a little more scientifically, I used a shutter speed tester app on my iphone to measure the shutter speeds of a known correctly working camera at three different positions on the shutter curtain (left, middle, right), then I played around with different settings for the 1st curtain and 2nd curtain gears on the problem camera to try and approximate the measurements obtained from the good camera. The closest setting was +2 increments on the gear for the 1st curtain, with the gear for the 2nd curtain left as is. The result: improved but not perfect exposure at 1/1000. I think increasing the tension a little more on the 1st curtain would improve the exposure at 1/1000 even further, but I know from the shutter tester measurements that slower shutter speeds would then be adversely affected. So I will live with the camera as is for now, and get it CLA'd sometime soon.
@ 1/1000 after +2 clicks on the 1st curtain gear

 3.
Gus, thanks for the detailed reply! That's very helpful. I just adjusted the 1st curtain by three increments (there's 12 teeth on the cog so that makes 1/4 of a turn) in the counter-clockwise direction, and will see how that goes.

FWIW I got the camera checked by Leica Japan in Ginza yesterday, and they said the camera was working fine and the shutter speeds were bang on, except for 1/500 which is slightly too fast, and 1/1000 which is slightly more too fast. They completely missed the capping though, so I'm not sure how much stock I should place in their assessment.

 4.
Alex, I appreciate your concern but after successfully CLA-ing a Nikon S2 last week myself, I'm feeling confident so am fully prepared to dive in and try this myself :)
I already understand how to add/reduce tension to the front/rear shutter curtains, but I'm a bit baffled about what is actually happening at 1/1000 in the above image. If I understand correctly, the dark strip down the left side of the image indicates that the curtains are overlapping at the start of the exposure. Which means I back off the tension on the rear curtain a little?
Gil, the camera has indeed but sitting unused for a number of years until I got it. In fact it may have never been used to shoot a roll of film.

 5.
I have a very clean low mileage Leica MP with the following shutter problem (tapering?) at 1/1000. All the other shutter speeds appear to be fine.

I suspect this is a fairly easy thing to fix, so before sending the camera in for a CLA, I'd like to try repairing it myself. I'm reasonably competent at doing camera/lens repairs so am pretty sure I could handle this with a bit of guidance. Can someone with experience doing this give me a few pointers on how to make the appropriate adjustments? Thanks!
@ 1/1000

@ 1/500
