1.
I have been scanning in some old family photos over the last few years. I found my D800 saving as RAW does a good job. It's a bit more work. My scanner is a Canon 8800F. On some photos that have the lustre texture the scanner can create some bright spots. Using the camera with 2 lights at 45 degree angles seems to help limit this.

 2.
Lex, thanks for the links and info. My dad, before he passed away, had started putting some of his photos from the 40s and 50s in a archival notebook with corners but they don't look as nice as the old albums.
The baby card above is smaller, there are a few larger ones in my album. I got a few books out on book binding, I was wondering about doing it myself but it seems like it is a lot of work and some investment in tools and supplies. For the Cabinet Card photos I was thinking about having someone cut mat board to fit the cards and then having some paper glued over it with the opening and slot but it might be too big of a project and expense.
I have a few black paper photo albums also that I would like to tackle eventually like what you are doing. For now I have been digitizing them and trying to figure out what to do to restore them.
I'm also making a photo book with some of the old photos and genealogy info I have been collecting. It's another way to make an album and you can share it with other family members.
Thanks for the links Brooks.

Thanks

 3.
I didn't know they had a name for these photos and album. My great grandfather brought it over from Sweden in 1906. His sister gave it to him with pictures of relatives already in it. Most of them were taken in Stockholm. Only a few I have names for, my grandfather wrote them down at one point. I got it from my Uncle a couple of years after my grandfather passed away in 1990. I have been keeping it in a acid free box. I'll have to look into a restoration service, they would know what to do to preserve it.
Thanks for the info.

 4.
Here's photo of the album:

 5.
I had a couple of questions. I have been digitizing some older family photos from the late 1800s. The album the photos are in is starting to fall apart. I would to find another album for them, but I have not been able to find anything online. They are amounted on mat board and are in a couple of sizes.
<a title="OlderPhotosMixed39 by G Thornwall, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7542/16068909650_c17dea48d8_c.jpg" alt="OlderPhotosMixed39" width="492" height="800" />

I would like to make a copy of the album with the prints I'll make from the digitized images. What albums do you use for displaying your photos? I have been using some I got at Costco but I'm not too happy with them. The Costco ones I can write next to them to label the photos but they only hold 4x6 photos. I got some archival protectors of different sizes that fit in notebooks, but there is no space for labeling the photos without writing on the back and they could fall out and get lost.
Thanks.

 7.
In the early 80s I lived in West Berlin and Munich, I took photos in Berlin, East and West Berlin. Never was stopped or given a hard time.

http://kd3su.us/photos/piwigo/index.php?/category/45
http://kd3su.us/photos/piwigo/index.php?/category/46
http://kd3su.us/photos/piwigo/index.php?/category/44
